Alternative to iPhone's own calendar? (Love it, but doesn't work...)

After I've updated to 5.1.1, my calendar doesn't work properly anymore.
I don't get email alerts anymore.
I haven't touched anything. Settings are the same, but new entries just doesn't get emailed to me.
Old entries (weekly ones, which was added before my update to 5.1.1) works fine and are emailed to me.
But new ones...nope!

So...is there an alternative calendar, which would do exactly the same?
I can't afford not to receive email alerts. Already missed a couple of important meetings.

Hang on - Email alerts? How did you set that up in iOS? Are you sure some other app isn't involved?

Is your data synced with a Mac? Is iCal set up to send email alerts there?

More info needed.

Are you using iCloud, Gmail, Exchange or just local calendars ?
Do you sync with cable to Over the Air ?

I have hundreds of iOS Users and yes there is the odd quirk here and there but most get on very well with iCloud, Gmail and Exchange.

I didn't set anything up. It was done automatically.
Every time I added an entry to my calendar - then 5 mins before the actual entry was due, I was notified on the phone. But I also received an email from Google Calendar (calendar-notification@google.com).
I don't do that anymore :-(

I'm using Google Apps, so Gmail I assume.
I really don't understand why it's stopped working after the update.
And yes, I've tried the following with no luck:

-----

If you've noticed that you're no longer receiving event notifications, reset the calendar's notification settings to resolve this issue. To do so, follow these steps:

In the calendar list on the left, click the down-arrow button next to the appropriate calendar, then select Notifications. (Alternatively, click the Settings link at the bottom of the calendar list, then click the Notifications link to the right of the appropriate calendar.)
Click the remove link next to each reminder set in the Event reminder section.
Deselect any selected boxes in the Choose how you would like to be notified section.
Click Save.
Return to the Notifications settings page.
Enable your desired notification options again.
Click Save.

OK, I've just found out that if I create the calendar entry on my computer (in Google Calendar), I do receive the email notification.
But if I create it on the phone, I don't.

That is correct. If you create an event on iOS you have to setup a local reminder, it will not setup an email notification from gmail. There are always limitation what can be done between OS's.

Now it might help if you setup your connection to Google Apps as an Exchange account rather than Apple's built in GMAIL template. It will use ActiveSync to connect and then you also gain contact sync.

Also you can check out this detailed info from the makers of BusyCal which goes into the issues between services etc.

But I don't understand why I was able to do this before I upgraded to 5.1.1.
I could go into the calendar on the iPhone, add an entry and then receive an email notification.
I still receive email notifications from events, which was set up before the upgrade (weekly notifications). These events were created on the phone.

OK, I've created one of the email accounts as an Exchange account.
Works fine for emailing, but I still don't get any email notifications.

I have never seen an option for setting Email notifications on iOS for calendar events only the in built iOS notifications. Now i may be wrong.....but i do support 100s of users on Exchange/Google Apps. You will of course get email notifications if you set them up from web interface.

You can however set automatic Email Notifciations for all events in Google calendars from your web interface.

Login to Google > Calendar > COG > Settings
Find your Calendar and edit Notifications

Sorry, my mistake. I wrote this totally wrong.
Yes, I haven't set up the Email Notifications on my iPhone.
I did this from my web interface (edit notifications).

My problem is that if I create an event on my iPhone (the same google calendar, which I access on my computer), I don't receive an email notification.
If I create an event on the computer, I do receive the email.

I don't understand why I don't receive email notifications, if the event is created on the phone.

I have not got any 5.1 devices to test on where i am now so unsure if this is a 5.1.1 issue or it could be something on the Google end. Overall I just do not see the problem with having iOS alerts on your phone instead of an email.

in answer to
"I don't understand why I don't receive email notifications, if the event is created on the phone"

It is because the email alert is not setup within the google event online when you add event on iPhone.
If you enter an event on iPhone with no notification set, let it sync, open it online - you will see no notification setup.(not even the automatic one that google should be adding)
However if you setup event on iPhone and set an iOS notification, it adds this to event to google cal with an online pop-up notification.

Looks like you will have to resort to iOS notifications rather than email.

However if you setup event on iPhone and set an iOS notification, it adds this to event with google and give you a website pop if online.

Looks like you will have to resort to iOS notifications rather than email.

But if I create an event on the phone (where I choose the calendar to be my Google Calendar), I can still log in to my Google Calendar on my computer and see that event.

So basically:

- I create an event in Google Calendar on my computer. I can see this event in Google Calendar on my computer. I can also see the event in iCal on my iPhone. When the event is 5 mins away from happening, I receive an email.

- I create an event in iCal on my iPhone (where I've chosen the Google Calendar). I can see this event in Google Calendar on my computer too, after it's been created on my iPhone. When the event is 5 mins away from happening, I do NOT receive an email.

This never used to be an issue.
Before I updated to 5.1.1, I could create an entry in iCal on my iPhone (where I chose the Google Calendar) and when the event was 5 mins away from happening, I DID receive an email.

If I'm out somewhere, and a calendar entry is 5 mins away from happening (for example, 'remember to feed the neighbours dog later today'), then I'm forced to remember this (if I'm not able to carry out the task immediately), if it only pops up on the iPhone screen.
If I instead received an email, I'm not forced to remember to feed his dog, as I would have an unread email on my phone. Or even when I got home, I would be notified again in Mail App.

OK, thanks for your help.
I still don't understand why it USED to be possible, but isn't anymore.
Oh well, I guess life goes on.

I've now switched to Calengoo and it automatically sends me an email notification, if the event is created on the phone.
Looks like a better calendar than iCal anyway.
