a weak airport signal Imac

Hi. Just upgraded to Talk Talk fibre optic, the engineers laptop got a full signal 2 rooms away from router but my imac got a poor signal, have moved the mac down in same room as router and now works OK, another engineer is coming to see things but does anyone know the answer to the poor signal.

What iMac ? What OS ? What Router ?
What tests did you do on signal ? did you just look at WiFI fan symbol in menu bar ?
If you option click on it it will give you more information.
Did you have a low or unreliable connection ?
You will NOT always be able to utilise the full bandwidth of Fibre on most WIFI connections anyway.

There is no question that Mac's do not have the best Wi-Fi but also ISP routers tend to be very low end. In my house which is a medium sized 4 bed....i have 1 main router then a wire to first floor (could use Powerline adapters) with a secondary wifi access point. Most people just think that one router will do the whole house.....this is not always the case.

Because that point is often overlooked here is an example of what can be seen by holding down the Option key and then clicking the WiFI symbol in the Menu Bar.

The ones in the red boxes are the most telling, however the Channel is only telling if you know what other channels are being used for a given GHz which can be determined by using iStumbler.
