System (10.5.8) Processes Hanging
I am using a PowerPC G5 (1.8 GHz) iMac running OS X Leopard (10.5.8) with 2 GB RAM. The machine has served me faithfully and without problems for 7 years now! Recently, I noticed it started working unusually slowly. On checking in Activity Monitor I found two system processes -- “coreaudiod” (root) and “UserEventAgent” (user) -- were hanging/not responding. When I quit the processes, they seem to reload immediately without issue and normally. However, sooner or later, for no reason I can find, the same two processes stop responding and slow down my machine. This happens in both “Safe” mode and normal boot-up. I’ve done anything and everything I could think of to correct this, including re-installing 10.5.8 using the Combo updater, all to no avail. Any help to sort this out will be very gratefully received. I can’t bear (or afford) the idea of discarding the computer though I’ve also a modern iMac running Lion.

Yours appears to be a commonly reported problem on Leopard.
Here's a couple of different threads that may help you... https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1197549?tstart=0 https://discussions.apple.com/message/7324063#7324063 |

Thanks very much, DeltaMac. The problem with UserEventAgent got sorted out following the advice in the links you provided, but all the alternatives relating to coreaudiod don't seem to have worked. That doesn't seem to matter too much, as I now see no noticeable problems in performance (including audio) even if I do "killall" of coreaudiod when iTunes is running, though it hiccups briefly!
So you at least solved my main problem of deteriorating performance.
