Files for Web: correct permissions method?

I'm not sure how it happened, but my local copy of my website...the files to which I make changes, then upload to replace their online counterparts, may have incorrect permissions.

...with the result that, when I upload those files, I get 403/access forbidden and other malarkey..

a few days ago, I uploaded some test files to my site. No problem, they loaded for me and for others I asked to view them.

Today I uploaded replacement files to the same place but the method was otherwise the same...cyberduck is my ftp app. Except that these files have this permission issue.

So, what in my workflow needs to change? The local files on my Mac? Do I need to use that app Batchmod to make sure that they all say 755?

Thank you,
