Always use combo updates !!!!!
Apple tends to stage big updates when using Software Update US/EUROPE/ASIA etc. |

Ok, accepted, but why?
I.e. what does SU do/not do that makes combos better/more reliable?

The fact that a software update has been released does not mean that it is instantly available through all channels. And I find it better to wait a few days after any major release simply because hiccups can and do occur, so I get a measure of security by letting the release come out and waiting to see if there are reports of problems.
Software Update gives machine-specific updates (called Delta updates). In the past, there were numerous instances in which such updates had issues, apparently because something wasn't properly updated with the Mac-and-OS-specific update. Anecdotally, it seems like the problems with Delta updates went away with 10.6 (maybe 10.5). Still, I've carried forward the practice of using the Combo updaters. The practical effects for me are a bigger download (so it takes a couple more minutes) and a manually run update (but I don't use Software Update anyway). |

Delta update problems have certainly not gone away and overall as i manage 100's of machines at multiple sites, i should know the pain when delta goes wrong. I still regularly have to deal with people (mainly power users) who had updated their machines and left them with an un-bootable system.
I am not saying they do not work.....as millions of Users use that way. I just know it is not as reliable as Combo updates which bundle everything into one big update, pre binds system correctly etc. |

Really bad word choice (and proofreading) on my part. I said that problems with Delta updates "went away" and I should have said something like "seemed to decrease." Thanks for noting your experiences, agentx.

;-) NaOH
Lion is killing me work wise...I am highly unimpressed by Apple ATM for pushing out a very buggy OS with huge holes all over the place. From a sysadmin perspective i will soon have to support 4 versions 10.5,10.6,10.7,10.8 all will have to use different "hacks" to work in Edu/Business environments. They change tons of mechanisms all the time even between increments and this is making my life hell supporting Macs. My Snow(10.6) deployments are rock solid but my Lion deployments are filled with daily bugs, spins, crashes, incompatibilities, kerberos issues, binding problems.....need i say more...... Since moving to Lion as my Primary OS (due to Apple's pig headed attitude over iCloud) I've lost a good 10% of my producativity, pissing about trying to keep it all working. I know i am not run of the mill user but very advanced.....and still struggle to get the best from it. |

....and don't even get me started on Lion Server as this frankly is only good for very small deployments/home use who do not want anything remotely mission critical ! I will be moving completely away from Mac Server in anything above 20 users, but i think this is what Apple wants.

...coupled with Apple B u l l S *** we are a consumer company.......then do not try and promote Enterprise/Business and Edu then !!! or provide what is needed to do the job right.
We have been waiting for VPP for nearly 1.5 years in UK and still not here. |

@NaOH:
Indeed, but I left the MBA on the default automatic check after my recent OS reinstall. @ agentx: I don't envy you that workload for one moment!

As a point of interest, has anyone heard of the mythical 10.6.9, or has anything even been seeded?

We will have to wait until around the time of MobileMe switch off (June 30th) if Apple make any moves on this. I feel Snow will be pretty much just security patches now. They have been giving away Snow Leopard disks to try and encourage upgrade to Lion for Leopard/Intel users. Overall i don't hold out much hope for iCloud contact sync with 10.6. Mail/Calendars work.

It's been pushed back to September 30th. No reason was given, but I'd guess that getting more users on post-10.6 systems was a contributing factor. |
