Yes, you can lose the function for burning DVDs, and other optical drive functions may be OK.
Are you getting error messages when you attempt to burn a DVD? Could be a hardware failure in the optical drive, or could be software. Or, could be a problem with a specific brand of blank DVD-R, so you should be sure to try a different brand of DVD media. Be sure to try logging in to another user on your Mac, and try to burn a DVD. If that works, then it's just a software issue in your user account. |

I have tried several different brands, all react the same way, it goes into the burn process, and a few seconds it finishes. msg says something like incompatible DVD. I'll tried loging in as another user and got the same, Opened the Burn Session, and seconds later "Finished Burn" Last edited by pfhannan; 05-04-2012 at 01:33 PM. |

"...something like incompatible DVD."?
It would be a help if you could post precisely what that message is - the wording can help decide what is causing the issue. Are you burning through the Finder, or Disk Utility, or iDVD, or some other app? (which app is it?) What kind of files are you trying to burn to a DVD (data, video, audio, music (commercial music - as from a music CD, etc.), or something else like TV programs, or other? Is it ALWAYS the same kind of files that you burn - or several different kind of burns? Have you looked in your Console for any messages posted at approximately the time of the failed burn? |
