Just fixed my "can't send" problem.
Solution within Macworld.com
Had to delete account and re-add it using "other" as the email service.
And then put in the first parameters.
Apple sw put in the rest.

To fix this when you are not on wifi, go to your mail setting, in your settings for your pop mail account, go to outgoing. Turn the primary server off. Your wireless carrier's server should be listed under other smtp servers.

turn that one on.

pretty simple.

You're right. That was pretty simple. Thanks for saving me the trouble of jumping through so many hoops to get this fixed.

I need some help /advice about this process please.
When I go to Gmail...I find I already have a Google account. I sign in using my account. It offers to allow me to set up a separate Gmail account, or, by completeing the form, add Gmail to my account, turning my Gmail address into the primary account username...( What does this mean...what primary account?)
Which option do I take to effect this workaround as Apple are nothing but trouble when it comes to expired accounts and passwords and access and creating new ID's etc etc etc...(real time ..b****y fed up with it ! )?
Id really like to avoid the situation where I have two accounts that they conflict and lock me out ! My primary email address is important for work purposes !
Thanks if anyone feels able to point me in the right direction !

Tim

You cant make it up ! The damn thing is rejecting a correct password ! I cant win.....its a nightmare !

I have the same problem, but mine only lasted for about a week before it wouldn't send emails. What was strange is that the email went to Drafts and about 3 days later it was sent out?? I have AOL as my primary account and now set up gmail as instructed by GimmeGimmeMomo. Once again it worked for only a few days and I'm now having the same problem.

cant send email from the 3G network

Thank you for all the information - I too am having a similiar problem. When I am at home and using my personal wifi - I can send email, but when I am away and using other wifi or the 3G network, it wont. With the steps that were laid out - do I need to change which outgoing server I use at home and when I am away? I followed the steps exact and when using my wifi, couldn't send any email. Thanks for all the help!

I don't know if I can lend some light. But I just did this: open your gmail account. If you can't because you forgot your password, simply make a new accout. The look of gmail changeda and it took me a while to figure this out - settings is the little cog wheel on the far right near the top of the page. click on it and click mail settings. the third tab is called accounts. Click on that and about 2 or three fields down (Im doing this by memory - sorry) gives you the option to add another account. That is where you click and follow the prompts - I hope this helps. I have done all the changes but haven't been able to test it - this suggestion seems to be a fix when we are away from home and not using our own personal wifi? I'm waiting to hear if this is the case. If it is - it seems that when away from home you need to turn off the smtp outgoing mail and turn on the gmail one. I'm going to go try it now to see if this is the case.

Another fix

So I fixed the problem for me, I realized the outgoing needs a password as well. I had changed my mail password, but only put the new password in incoming on my phone, added the new password to outgoing and it's all better now. This might be the case for some of u. Also, I didn't read thru all the pages so I'm sorry if this had come up already.

delete troublesome account and reinstall.

My iphone 4 refused to send emails from one of my accounts soon after I downloaded the most recent updates. I started to go with the Gmail solution but first tried deleting the offending account and then simply added it again. Worked! It's a simple step worth a shot.

2 passwords

What I finally figured out is that there are 2 different passwords...one for sending mail and one for receiving mail. So, when I would fix my email password, it was only fixing the receiving mail password.

Settings
mail, contacts, calendar
Account(mail, Hotmail)
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP, smtp.live.com)
Primary Server(smtp.live.com)
Outgoing Mail Server (Password!!!!! - fix here!!!!!)

After you have fixed it, as you close the screen it should say something like email or password verified...something like that. Then I heard my phone sending my email!!! Outbox empty!!!

We went to the "www.apple.com/support/iphone/mailhelper/" and followed all its directions (you are asked to enter your e-mail address, and it returns with everything you need to enter to set up the info).

Before this worked, we had to undo the mail sync in iTunes, then select the "eject iPhone" from a pull down, unplug the iPhone. We then deleted the earthlink account we had first created. Then we recreated a new Earthlink account using the info given us from the link above. The only thing we had to change was under Settings/Mail/Authentication ... don't select anything. It defaults to the MD5 thing but doesn't display anything -- just leave it that way.

I guess that sometimes the sync operation muddles up the process when first creating yor mail accounts.

@mrjones19 - you should at least try to check the posts that you copy and paste.

This info was current several years ago, but is not useful now, and probably not relevant to the OP, anyway...

Do you have anything helpful to add - without anonymously pasting some info that you 'find?'

Thumbs up iPhone not sending pop mail

I have to thank you for your posting the solution! I carefully went through all of your steps and finally after 3 months of being unable to reply to or send mail it works- I even was able to add multiple email addresses for it to process in this way! Thank you!
