Google Maps

So, I'm sitting in my hotel room here in Tha Kaek, Laos watching Lao TV which suggests that we visit Xiang Kang, Laos. So, I crank up Google Maps and search on "Xiang Kang, Laos" and the one and only result returned is "Federal Reaerve Bank Boston".

What am I missing here?

I get that same bank when looking up Xiang Kang, Laos
Must be some weirdness in Google Maps.

Maybe search with Xiangkhoang, Laos? Does that give you what you want?

Weirder still. Using Firefox to access Google Maps, I get the Boston bank. Using the same search string in Safari with Google Maps, I get no results.

Google Maps: Xiangkhouang, Laos

Translating to English from languages that use completely different alphabets or characters tends to happen in different ways depending on who or what is doing the translation.

Thanks to all. That's the spot. We don't read Lao very well, so the transliteration was just a (bad) guess on our part.

You're absolutely right Trevor. The airport in Bangkok is transliterated as Suvarnabhumi, but is actually pronounced something like "soowannapoom".

With Google Maps you usually get a result in the right country as long as you spell that part correctly. And, it usually does a fair job of guessing about transliterations. I guess that's why the Boston USA result threw me so.

I should add though that when searching for locations in Thailand I'm often served up with Thai restaurants in the US!
