iMovie 11 won't recognize Canon ZR700

I have an old Canon ZR700 (maybe 6 years old) with some video on the tape that I'd like to keep.

I know it worked when I could hook up a FW 6pin to 4 pin connector to my (long gone) Mac Mini.

I have a mid-2010 iMac running 10.7.2. I bought a FW 800 9pin to 4pin cable.

My camera is plugged in and on play (what the manual says to do) but iMove does not see it.

Any ideas?

It works in iMovie '09 though. Apple removed that cameras it supports? That doesn't make much sense, does it?
