Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I have a WD external hard drive (Mdl#: WD1600U07-1003) that recently got knocked out of the USB port. It is no longer docking and showing up in finder. I store several large files on the drive, that if anything, I would like to recover so I could reformat the drive without destroying anything on it. But before that, I would like to repair the drive if possible. Disk Utility isn't being any help. While the drive isn't showing up in Finder under "Devices," it is showing up in DU. I tried to verify and repair the external drive and I keep coming up with the "Filesystem verify or repair failed" error.
Verifying volume "Hunter HD" Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume. Checking Extents Overflow file. Checking Catalog file. Keys out of order The volume Hunter HD needs to be reparied Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed. Verify and Repair volume "Hunter HD" Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume. Checking Extents Overflow file. Checking Catalog file. Keys out of order Rebuilding Catalog B-tree. The volume Hunter HD needs to be reparied Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed. I saw somebody ask somebody in another thread to run some lines in terminal. I figured I might as well too to see if it can tell you anything... I'm usually pretty good at trouble shooting on my own (replacing an internal drive, etc), but when it comes down to the hard stuff, I get lost. Can I repair the drive without losing the data? Or if I have to rewrite the drive, is there a free way to recover the data off of it before I reformat? Thanks for any help |

I got my hands on a copy of DiskWarrior and it took care of my problem for me. Excellent program, and very easy to use if you end up having the same problem as me. My external drive was restored in minutes.
