MacBookPro crash, black lines in display
I have a 2011 MBP, I've recently started experiencing a problem of display problems/system crashing with black lines in the display. I hook my MBP to an external monitor for more screen real estate. I haven't seen this problem when the MBP is not hooked up to the display, so I think it may be related to the problem. What happens is: I am working on the MBP, then the screen becomes distorted, pixelated with black stripes, it looks like the screen has shifted a little too. Keyboard stops responding, although I still have networking because I can still ssh into the MBP. I basically have to do a hard reboot to get the screen back to working order.
Is this a known problem? It's happened 3 times this week, about once a day - I'm worried something on the MBP may be going bad. Any advice appreciated. |

Try a hardware test.
Restart while holding Command-D (for diagnostics, eh?) Run both the standard, and the extended test. Do you get any error codes? Someone here can help you decipher them. |

hmmm I did run a hardware test (standard and extended) and the results were 'no trouble found'. This was just concerning to me because it happened 2-3 times in the past week. |

Can you use your MBPro for a week, without the external display attached?
If the problem occurs, even without the external, then you can go for a repair - should be less than 12 months old, so it's in-warranty. If this ONLY happens with the external display, I would suggest trying a different video adapter. |

If you read the OP - this is a 2011 model, which does not use Nvidia vid chips.
The 'famous' Nvidia problem is for models from 3 years (almost 4 years) back. |
