OSX will not load desktop

hey folks, from this i'm sure you experts will realize i am not used to troubleshooting macs, any help would be great.

I was working away on Mail this afternoon and the screen went grey and the power symbol appeared with a dialogue box telling me that i need to press the power button and restart. I presume the OS crashed? Totally out of the blue.

After the reboot things worked ok - the machine chimed, OS opened and i logged back in again. However no desktop items (including my HD) were displayed. My dock appeared and the applications located on it do work - hence why i can write this message using safari. I get no menu items on the upper menu bar, no airport connectivity symbol, only the clock and battery etc in the top right. I cannot access Spotlight.

When i do a force quit to try and restart the finder i find that the application name is constantly appearing and disappearing in the Force Quit box. And at the moment the computer is running without 'Finder' appearing in this box. I can't access any files or directories thus can't run any of the disk utilities.

I am running OS X 10.4.11, on a 1.67Ghz PowerPC G4 15" powerbook with 512mb RAM and all the usual standard stuff. System profiler sees the hard-disk, it just doesn't show it on the desktop. I have been having a problem with applications randomly crashing on me, especially Firefox and Safari. I did a full system scan for virus' a month ago and found nothing. Any help would be great.

You should try the standard troubleshooting suggestions:
http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/ (see the "My Mac needs help" section)
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...04011205473937
http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=7269
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html

In particular, be sure to do "Repair Disk" (different from "Repair Disk Permissions"!) in Disk Utility when booted from the Install CD/DVD. I.e. you restart from the Install CD/DVD, then run the version of Disk Utility that is available from one of the menus there (in 10.4.x, it's the Utilities menu), then go to the First Aid tab, select your boot drive, and click "Repair Disk" (NOT Repair Disk Permissions). If Repair Disk finds any errors at all, repeat the repair until no errors are found.
See this Apple doc:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

Thanks for the replies guys, its much appreciated.

Appleman - I can't access the finder preferences because i cannot load the finder! I can load programs by calling up Terminal. If I run a program, OS X works just fine - i.e. the program Safari etc opens along with the menu bar, lock, spotlight icons - I just cannot see any finder windows etc. I cannot open finder if you Cmd+tab or try to do a force quit/refresh- it does not appear in the list.

hayne - yeah, i tried some of these before posting here. I called up disk utility in terminal and ran a repair disk, it came back absolutely fine so i don't think there is anything wrong with my hardware. If i load Safari, i can access the menu bar and spotlight works - thus i can find my files and open them - i just have no Finder!

Any help would be great!

Look in your logs. There should be some repeated message about Finder crashing. You may also have a big Finder.crash.log.

You can easily view your logs using the Console app, in /Applications/Utilities. Or, if you cannot get to the Console, an alternative is to use your Terminal and view the logs from the command line. Of, if that doesn't work, you could try using Safari (which you've said that you can open) and entering (in the URL field), something like
file:/var/log/system.log
or
file:/var/log/finder.crash.log

...however, this may just attempt to show those files in the Finder, so may not help.

boot up in single user mode. When its done logging into user mode then type in fsck -fy. It will then check your system and repair anything wrong. Once it says "File System was Modified" then type in fsck -fy again just to make sure. Once its done again then type in reboot and that should work. I had the same problem as you and this worked for me.

Good Luck,
Eric

Hi all,

Thanks for the suggestions but as yet, none have been successful!

I booted single user mode and ran fsck -fy three time, all of them showed that everything was fine and no problems were encountered.

When i use safari to try and load a folder all i ever get is "you do not have permissions to access that folder" which is odd because i am the only person that uses this machine and i am logged in with an admin account.

I tried creating a dummy account, but the system just crashed when i tried to add a user account. Safari and other programs are incredibly unstable at the moment, and will crash at will... so i hope i can post this before the next one occurs.

How do i call the console application, or directly call the logs using terminal? It has been a long long time since i played in a command-line environment.

Cheers folks for your continuing help!

To launch the "Console" application from a Terminal window, type the following command:

open -a Console

and then press Return.

Hey,

Thanks for the console info. I had a browse through the logs. Because the system is running so poorly right now i have a whole load of crash logs for various programs. I am happy to paste whichever logs you guys need,so i thought i'd ask rather than trying to second guess you and cluttering up the forum.

Cheers

Start by posting the crash log for Finder.

A few "interesting" things in those logs:
1) The Finder crash seemed to be happening when you were dragging something with the mouse. But I thought you said the Finder was crashing immediately when it started up - i.e. that you didn't have time to do anything with it.

2) The repeated messages about the keyboard and IOUSBWirelessControllerDevice make it seem like there might be a hardware problem with the keyboard. And what wireless devices do you have active? (You should disconnect all non-essential peripherals and turn off wireless networking while troubleshooting.)

3) You seem to have Intego VirusBarrier installed. It might be a good idea to uninstall that while troubleshooting - sometimes these anti-virus programs cause trouble.

4) One of the messages refers to "NU" something or other. Could this be Norton Utilities? Norton software doesn't have a good rep on OS X.
In general, you want to uninstall all 3rd-party software that has a system-wide effect while you are troubleshooting. I.e. anything that runs in the background all the time.

Hey,

Yeah the crash happened when i was dragging around some files, i think was making a folder for attaching to an email. I think I was dragging maybe 15 files or so... i honestly can't remember the exact number, it was a wee while ago now.

To clear up some confusion: When i startup the following happens:

Apple chimes, grey apple OSX appears, login window appears, i log in with my normal username and password. The dock loads. The desktop with background picture loads, nothing else loads. I have no icons, no menu bar, clock, airport, battery, volume controls etc etc all missing. My desktop is completely blank of files or folders.

OS X is running, clearly, because i can access all the programs in the dock. When i click on the 'finder' icon in the dock, it does nothing. i cannot access my trashcan either. When i open an application from the dock - e.g. safari - the safari menu bar appears at the top of the screen and i can access all the usual menus including the apple and spotlight. When i quit safari, the safari menu bar stays at the top of the screen even thought the program is no longer running and the menus do not work.

The only way I could load programs such as terminal which are not located in my dock, was by locating them through spotlight. No finder windows are generated in this search so i can use it. Except.... that as of this morning the search no longer works either - spotlight started indexing - now i cannot find anything at all, or load any other programs not in my dock. Can i call/locate executable files using safari/firefox?

If i try to open files using safari, i can still see all my folders, hard-disk etc. i can open files using MSWord etc ... anything located in my dock.

Wireless devices... I only have apple airport active just now on my network "BSweet" - otherwise i couldn't access the internet and you fine people! However, I have ethernet connection on the DSL, would it be better for me to access the net through this connection, turning off the airport until the problem is solved?

I installed Virusbarrier as a trial version a few months ago, i actually didn't like it too much and deleted it from the applications folder, so as far as i knew it should have been deleted and no longer running any programs on my computer! Its hard to uninstall anything when you cannot get any finder windows to open or see any of your files!

NU? I looked through the logs and identified the line you mentioned, but i have no idea what this is. I have never installed Norton on this machine, even as a trial version.

I have no peripherals connected at the moment.

Thanks for all your help, as you can probably tell i'm a little annoyed with the machine right now. I have a big presentation to do next week and had intended on using this laptop to give it... at the moment that looks like a pipe-dream.

With all of your various problems, I think it is probably easiest to just do an "archive and install" from the Install CD/DVD being sure to select the option to preserve users.
(See this Apple doc: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120)
This will keep all your user files and just replace the OS X system files and applications. You should run Software Update afterwards to get your system up to date again.

It would be best if you did a backup of your user files first - just in case something goes wrong (even though this isn't very likely).

It is quite possible that even after an "archive & install" you will still have the same problem if the problem turns out to be something under your user account.
But doing an archive & install will at least get rid of the various 3rd-party stuff that you installed and apparently haven't been able to uninstall properly.

Thanks,

I will give that a go.

I have a full backup of the system on a separate external hard-disk, except for the last few weeks perhaps, so i am not especially worried about loosing a large amount of important data. Thank you for your assistance so far and i will post the results once i have done the restore.
