Diacritic accents not displaying properly on Word
hello all
i would appreciate if someone could help solve this puzzle. a month or so ago, everything worked fine with the diacritic accents on letters. since then, i have not touched Word, except to lend my Mac to a friend who needed to write her CV and letters. for the last few days, i try to type like i normally do, with the accents, and for some reason, Word automatically changes the font into Monaco and it is impossible to format it into Times New Roman or anything else that isn't sans serif. this means i can change it to Helvetica, for example, or Gill Sans or Lucida Grande, but NOT, oddly, Arial. what on earth happened? is it a problem with my fonts? i recently downloaded some free fonts from the internet. is it a problem with Word? did my friend perhaps unwittingly change something and now i don't know how to fix it? is it possible to change the encoding in Word for a document (not a Web document)? oh yes, input on the keyboard has remained the same, nothing has changed. some info: Mac OSX 10.4.11 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 1 GB DDR SDRAM i don't know what other info you might need but i'll try to supply if necessary. can someone help please? i need to write my thesis! thanks so much! |

hello again,
i forgot to mention that the text for which i need the diacritic accents is neither english nor any other western language, but transliterated sanskrit. eg: "Rāmāyaṇa" with an ā (lowercase A with a macron) and ṇ (lowercase N with an underdot). for this, i use the font Times CSX+, which worked well before. hence, i do not understand why it suddenly doesn't work anymore. some other information that might be useful: - Word version 11.3.8 - Style "Normal"; and even if i "clear formatting", nothing happens. the rest of the text will change, but the text with the diacritic accents remains at Monaco (or Helvetica etc.) - also, my previous documents do not display the diacritic accents anymore. the following have not been changed, i.e. the settings remain the same as before: - .doc to save documents - "Draft Font" not enabled in Preferences>View - save as "Word document" in Preferences>Save - in Preferences>Compatibility... "Recommended options for..." box set to "Microsoft Word 2000-2004 and X" - in that same dialogue box, nothing is checked can anyone please help? thank you. |

Has your International -> Input Menu preferences for your keyboard layout been set to a non-Unicode layout?

oh yes, one of the first things i checked. i am using the US extended keyboard layout (hence unicode) and that has not changed.
Times CSX+ worked fine before. when i started having this problem, i trashed the font and reinstalled it. however, the problem remains the same. the problem is not that the diacritic accents do not display, they do. the problem is that Word will change all the other text selected (without diacritics) into whatever i want (be it Times CSX+ or anything else) but refuses to change the text *with diacritic accents* to display anything else except those i have mentioned (Monaco etc.). any ideas? please? |
