Instant message clients--iChat and Adium both have problems...

I don't really like iChat. It's lacking in features, its buddy list window is gigantic, and I can't figure out how to get Jabber working properly. (Though that last one may be just me.) I tried Adium and I really like it--it handles my AIM, ICQ, and Yahoo accounts without a hitch, I love the interface customization options, and I can make my entire (large) buddy list fit in a transparent window about an inch wide onscreen.

But Adium has a lot of problems with communication other than one-to-one text. For example, I can't receive files sent to me, or invite other people to group chats. I've got the most current version (1.0.4). Is there another multiprotocol client that can do all these things? (Customizable interface, works with groupchat and file transfers.) Is there a way to fix either iChat or Adium so they work like I want?

Thanks for your help!
