Unable to connect two Macs

I hope I am not asking a duplicate question but I am finding it impossible to connect 2 Macs each running 10.3.7.

I have done everything that the help pages say and they are unable to see each other.

One is an old graphite G4 and the other is the Dual Powermac 1.25GHz. Both running OS 10.3.7. Both have Appletalk turned on. Keep losing my broadband settings when trying to change network settings in the 1.25ghz. Have tried different leads in case that is a problem, no change. In 'Go>Connect To Server>' I am getting my local computer and nothing else. The graphite is nowhere to be seen.

What more can I do bearing in mind that I am not very technically minded?
