account in mail app is GONE!

System: G4 867 MP OS 10.2.8

A friend was working on my computer and had a lot of very large files on my desktop. When I went to check my email the app acted very sluggish. I looked at the space left on my system disk and it read 56 meg. I quit the mail app. When I opened it back up one of my mail clients was gone! I use two, one for personal use and one for business. Of course it was the business account that was trashed. When I opened preferences to see of the account was there, it wasn't. Any suggestions to where all that information may have gone and if I can recover it?
