afp/ftp permissions

hello. ill be the first to admit, i am a total newbie to the mac/unix world, so you must take it easy on me!

my buddie and i both have machines running osx, i 10.3, he 10.2

we have both set up ftp sharing, and or afp sharing --> we have enabled fowarding in our routers and have created an account for each other on our machines.

we are both able to connect to each others machines using the set account names.

the problem is, we each have folders in our own home directories that we would like to share with each other over either ftp or afp. when we connect to each others machines we are only seeing folders in the new home directories that were created for the new user accounts.

ive tried setting permissions for his user account in the "get info" section but nothing seems to work!

how do we allow access to various folders for each other!?
