scanjet 5530 - dark blues and blacks look pixelated

I bought this scanner because it automatically feeds 4x6 pictures thru using a vacum (to keep pictures from scratching on the glass, but no matter what I do (,jpg or .tif and also adjusting resolution, the balcks and dark blues look pixelated, kinda like the have a reduced color palette that can't make the gradation steps correctly.
Anyone else experience this?
I am going to try scanning on my pc to see if its a mac os driver problem.

Anyone else use this scanner?
