mail.app problem

i opened my email (mail.app in 10.2.1) this morning and many of the emails display garbled text all of a sudden. funny non legible characters sometimes the whole email other times just portions.
otherwise the computer seems to be normal.
any ideas?

... it seems my addressbook is also scrambled. most of text for the names and addresses are now numbers.

And we can assume logging out and logging back in didn't fix the problem?

that's correct.

restart. shut down. virus check with virex 7. disk utility.
fsck -y

nothing so far has helped.

I had similiar issues. Turned out to be a font conflict. Once I removed the bad ones, all went back to normal.

I'm only glad to help. It threw me for a loop for a while, too.

In my case, it was a duplicate version of a font called 'Dragonwick' that had an ID conflict with Arial. I think the ID was assigned years ago in OS 9 by ATM, and carried over to the OS X installation. It didn't give any problems until we upgraded to Jaguar. Once I removed all the 'extra' fonts, the problem stopped. I have since been adding them back, but only as I need them- probably a good idea anyway as there were thousands and some dupes.

to be honest i don't know which fonts caused the problem. i had installed a set of adobe fonts the day or so before and ended up just deleting the whole set. i did leave the helvetica and futura variations on with success.

sorry i can't be of more help.

Just FYI for those of you who don't know that a font is actually a simple program and can very easily cause system problems such as these....
