Help with DocuPen

I recently purchased a DocuPen scanner from Planon, which is a handheld scanner that operates independently of a computer. It's a slick piece of hardware IF I can get to work with a Mac. I am running OS 10.3.8, and I installed the Cardinal Driver and the MacPen Twain software that I downloaded from the Planon website. I opened my copy of OmniPage X, went into Preferences to choose my Scanner, selected the TWAIN driver as the manufacturer, the PenTwain DS as the scanner, and TWAIN as the driver. The box confirms that the TWAIN driver is installed, but when I click to Verify my scanner (which is connected by USB), I get error messages advising that the program is unable to connect to the scanner.

Can anyone help?!
