DVR-103 1.49 Firmware Upgrade Question

I have a G4/733 machine that came with a Superdrive. It has the original DVR-103 firmware version 1.22. From what I understand, newer machines come with firmware version 1.49. An upgrader to 1.49 is available but I don't think Apple offers it or suppports the upgrader. It might even violate the warranty to try to upgrade the firmware but I'm not sure of this.

Anyway, I found the 1.49 upgrader and downloaded it from here ...
http://195.134.134.27/downloads/mac...3_149_RPC-1.bin

The readme I got with it is a little confusing. It refers to unlimited region code changes ... which sounds like a hack and something I don't need.

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of using this firmware upgrader? Does it make the drive burn DVDs faster or something? Do I need it? Will it void the machine's warranty?

TIA

:-)
