Non-Glossy screen

I'm ready to buy a new Apple laptop. I'd very much like to get the 13" (which is what I have now), but the only way to get the non-glossy display (which I hate) is to buy the 15". More size, more weight, more money - all because I don't want an irritating glossy screen. It sucks ):

I was planning to get the high-res version - I figure I might as well. Any reason not to?

I wish Apple would have just updated the PBG4 12" form-factor with modern internals. I miss that little machine.

PBG4 12" form-factor with modern internals ±= MacBook Air...

Or - the MBPro Retina display model gives you the great color quality of the glossy screen, while minimizing reflections. I think it's the best of both worlds. What do you think of the Retina display, after you tried it out?

MBA is a completely different form factor.

I don't really care about colour quality. As long as red is red, green is green, blue is blue, etc. - I don't care if the shade of red is +/ .005% or whatever of what someone defined.

As for the Retina display - I tried it out in the store. Didn't see what the big deal was. If I want to look at something that requires a lot of pixels, I'm not going to be looking at a 15" screen anyway.

If Apple wanted to excite me with its display, put would put that kind of resolution on its 27" monitors and sell them at their current price - that's the only way a 27" display would be worth Apple's asking price.

As it is, the price difference between a 13" and a 15" w/o a glossy display is $800 (+53%). That is a LOT of money or the privilege of not having to look at myself in a mirror all day.

The point I was making about the retina display - is that you get the advantages of the glossy screen, without the "privilege of having to look at yourself in a mirror all day". Maybe you didn't notice that when you were counting pixels, eh?
And, there you are... A good move forward in display usability, much easier on the eyes (especially my old eyes
Is it expensive, but worth it? For me, yes...
I expect in a few months that the retina technology will filter down to the smaller screens. And, with price being an issue, the premium should be less by that time.

I found the retina display too glossy too - and it's still on a much bigger machine than I want to buy, which is a 13".

Anti-glare screen covers are readily available here for around $20, thus solving your problem. I've had one on my MB since 2008.

I tried one on my current Macbook Pro. I thought it sucked and took it back off, $20 poorer.

Potential solution

I think I will using Tech Restore, to put in a matte display in a brand new 13". The price difference between the two machines is about $700. Even after paying $300 for a display swap, I'm still $400 cheaper, and I'm ending up with the machine I actually want.

Now I just got to get them to ship to Alaska at a reasonable price.

Well, I ended up buying a 15" with matte display. After I got it (in the mail), I had it for 2 days before I returned it. The screen kept flopping down when holding it at an angle, plus it was just too big.

So, I bought a 13" with mirrored display at the Applestore, and immediately sent it off to TechRestore. Total cost with shipping both ways for that service is right at $300. It should get there today, and hopefully I will get it back Tuesday or Wednesday. Overall, I end up about $500 cheaper than the 15", but I'm still effectively overpaying for the 13" by $300. Oh well.
