10.5 can not connect to internet
My situation:PPC 2.3MHz box running 10.5.8, ethernet connection to my broadband router. It is configured to obtain IP from DHCP. IP obtained no problem, but when I am running Safari not a single page can be opened, complains no connection to internet. Firewall is opened for all.
Identical box connected to the same router has no issues. Some history: just bought this box, it had 10.5.4, the time on it was 1969. No OS Install dvd. Could not obtain proper ip through DHCP, it would always self-assign 169... What I tried: upgraded from 10.5.4 to 10.5.8, after this at least DHCP scheme begin working and Mac is getting proper IP. Also tried to trash several com.apple... files from Preferences and such, added configd mDNSrecorder and rakoon to allow list in firewall, reset PRAM - nothing helped. What else can I do? DNS setting
Hi,
My first suspect would be the DNS settings. System preferences -> Network -> select Ethernet -> advanced tab -> DNS servers tab. Your router DNS should be here, and you may also add the external DNS address your router is using and any of the faster free DNS servers. If this does not resolve things, use "Yasu" to clear all caches and restart. http://download.cnet.com/Yasu/3000-1...-10671537.html Regards, Nick |

Battery
Hi,
Also sounds like you may need a new PRAM battery. Regards, Nick |

Thanks for your replies!
The DNS is not suspect, as ping by IP does not work, as in: ping 4.2.2.1 ping replies HOST DOWN It looks to me that when system was brought when battery was dead it made security ceritficates in system s/w invalid. Although I checked configd and mDNSresolver using codeview it shows proper Apple certificate. I am not sure what and where else to check. Is there any way to use my good G5 to use as a source and restore it wiping everything completely into this Mac? Again, install dvd was not available when I bought it, otherwise I'd just re-install OS from dvd. Any hints would be appreciated. |

Hi,
The problem G5 has been used on another network so you have no idea what settings may have been cached and are conflicting with your set up. Before doing anything else, clear the caches and restart. Does it work now ? If you still want to reinstall, connect the two G5s with a firewire cable, boot the "good" G5 and then start the problem G5 holding the T key down to get it into target disk mode. Repair permissions on the good HDD, then erase the problem HDD and clone the good HDD using Carbon Copy Cloner. Shut down the G5s, reboot the problem G5 and clear the caches in case of different hardware. Reboot and try it. Regards, Nick |

Thank you for the info on using Target disk mode, I did not know about it (I am unix guy) - after I re-formated the drive and copied over from the 'good' Mac everythink is ok. I replaced cmos batery as well, so now this is one happy box. THANKS A LOT!
