Does the screen that you see look like this? ![]() If so, this is indicative of something called a kernel panic. One page from Apple about kernel panics can be found here: "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) message appears (Mac OS X v10.5, 10.6) Please give us a lot more information. Exactly, and in great detail, why did you restore to an old backup? Trevor

that is exactly the message,my mac mini 80 gb 10.6.8 with snow leopard was running really slow so i had done a time machine backup and i did a fresh install using my installation dvd,but when i tried to go back to 14/05/12 using the time machine it did not put every thing back as it was,i had seen on the net that i could use the installation dvd and go to utilities and do a restore which i did but after restarting the system i got the above message ?
thank you. |

I first would be very suspicious of the hard drive. Your symptoms (sudden big slowdown of the system) would mean a quick hard drive test, which you should be able to do by booting to the installer DVD. Try this tip: Insert the DVD. shut power off - you could simply hold the power button in for about 5 seconds, and your mini will shut off - or simply pull the power plug briefly. This is not the best way to treat your system, but that may be the choice that you need to get the system power off. Press and release the power button, then immediately hold the Option/Alt key. You should see at least one icon appear on the screen, for the OS X installer. Press Tab a couple of times, and you should see that icon is highlighted, or your mouse should work to select that installer icon. Press Enter or Return. You should then boot to the installer, where you can run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard drive in that utility, and click the Repair Disk button at the bottom right of that window. Does it pass the test? Quit Disk utility, and continue on with the OS X install. If you instead quickly get the same kernel panic (You must restart your computer now!) - then I will first suspect that the internal hard drive has failed, and needs to be removed/replaced before you can do anything else. It's not very likely that your "Mac is no good any more", but is simply a failed hard drive. Last edited by DeltaMac; 05-16-2012 at 12:50 PM. |

If your Windows keyboard is wired (as opposed to wireless) it should still work to press and continue to hold the Shift key immediately after the computer starts up.
If your Windows keyboard is wireless, then really you'll need to try a different, preferably wired, keyboard to start in Safe Mode. Try borrowing one from somebody. Trevor

Note that starting in Safe Mode may or may not solve the problem--it's only a very early thing to try while troubleshooting your kernel panic, and I personally have never seen it solve kernel panics.
Kernel panics are often difficult to diagnose. Another thing to try is reinstalling OS X. Trevor

That's why I said Option/Alt
The alt key is the key between your left Windows key, and the spacebar (OK - there it is, I see it now!) |
