iMac Lion USB Ports
I am not sure where to post this but the iMac is hardware and here is my potential issue.
When connecting several devices Epson Printer, Scanner via USB ports on the iMac the scanning or printing operation freezes, will not complete. Attached to the iMac I have a powered USB Hub (Dr. Bott) when connected to the hub these devices work perfectly. Is there something wrong with the iMac USB ports? Do I need to replace them under AppleCare. |

Can you describe exactly, in much more detail what happens, and the order of events? Are you saying that printing freezes when you have a lot of devices connected via USB on the Mac? Or that adding devices causes printing to freeze? Lots of information about your USB devices will be in System Information in Utilities folder. Click on the USB item in the sidebar and see if everything is listed. Is everything powered, or replying on the USB for power? What are your devices, exactly? Make, model? Which USB ports are you using on the Mac? On the keyboard, or the back of the Mac? Last edited by benwiggy; 05-01-2012 at 12:03 PM. |

Epson 2450 Perfection Scanner, Epson Stylus Photo R800.
For example when the scanner is connected directly USB to the iMac it will start scanning and then stop in the middle of scan and not complete. So I running the above USB devices from the HUB. Dr. Bott T7 powered hub. If the devices do not require power, then only data is travelling down the wires.
It's kind of strange that the USB port on the Mac can send and receive data that has come through the Dr. Bott hub, but not directly. So I don't know whether it is a faulty USB port or not. Do oyu get any log messages in the Console utility that are relevant to the scanning/printing freeze, or to USB in general? If you have AppleCare, then i would certainly use it. |

I show two hubs on the machine. They are consistent with all Apple Machines. Apple says their USB ports support up to 480 MB/Sec.
That appears to be this hub. Hub: Product ID: 0x2514 Vendor ID: 0x0424 (SMSC) Version: 0.03 Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec Location ID: 0xfa100000 / 2 Current Available (mA): 500 Current Required (mA): 2 There is another Hub listed consistent with all Apple machines that shows 12 Mb/sec. That is this Hub. BRCM2046 Hub: Product ID: 0x4500 Vendor ID: 0x0a5c (Broadcom Corp.) Version: 1.00 Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec Manufacturer: Apple Inc. Location ID: 0xfa110000 / 4 Current Available (mA): 500 Current Required (mA): 0 Are there two types of USB ports on the iMac some that support higher speeds than others. Comments? |

The BRCM2046 is the Bluetooth controller, which is reported through the USB bus.
It would not need to use a high-speed USB port. ...So, not related to your issue. |
