Question Window Server/Window Manager in MacOS X

You know how there was the window server process in MacOS X which controlled the GUI (I think) and if you killed it it would log you out? I'm sure the process was called window server. I was looking the other day for it and I couldn't see it instead there was Window Manager. When I killed that it logged me out. I can only assume they've changed the name. Does anyone remember whether it was called window server or manager? This was after I had updated to 10.1.3.

hmm, i dunno about that...

% ps axww | grep -i window
68 ?? S<s 14:09.93 /System/Library/CoreServices/WindowServer
366 ?? Ss 0:02.78 /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/loginwindow console

those are the only processes i have with 'window' in their name.

also, it's prolly not too very good to go killing processes indiscriminantly, especially one that logs you out without allowing processes to quit gracefully.

Window Server is now alias

I checked that out and the 'WindowServer' item in the CoreServices folder is now an alias to an item named 'Window Manager' so it looks as if they did change the name.

PS. Yes I know it's a good idea to kill it. Do you know of anyway via the console to log out a currently logged in user?

Say there is someone sitting in front of my machine and i want to log in via SSH and log them out. You can kill the window manager but i'd rather not have to do that.
