Can't access website
 

I am having a really weird problem on my iMac. I have a particular website that I can't access properly, it will load but incredibly slowly in both Safari and Firefox and will often just timeout. I can ping the website fine, but if I do a tracert it will timeout at the final hop.

Now, this is where it gets very strange. Both of my Macs are having the same problem. However, if I boot into a Windows VM it's fine! It loads fast and i can tracert to it just fine.

I thought it might be a DNS problem, so I cleared my cache and it did nothing. It's getting annoying now as I've had this problem for a couple of weeks, does anyone have any ideas?

I am running Leopard with an Airport Extreme router.

It could be a session problem. Have you tried quitting Safari and then logging back in?

It could still be a DNS issue. Have you tried setting your Mac to use a public DNS?

I don't think it is. As I mentioned i'm getting it on both of my Macs (have done for a few weeks), yet its fine in Windows.

It might be useful to cut the visual parts of the browser out of the equation by using a text-only browser as a test to see what part of the HTTP transaction is causing a problem.

If you don't have any DNS settings on the Mac, it could be. That's because the Mac is then relying on the router and the PC isn't. Have you tried resetting the router?

Never had an Internet problem with my new iMac OS 10.5.6 until I tried to load site "http://www.mia.com.mk" which is a national news agency loading swiftly in Win XP/Win Vista. Finally I configured OpenDNS servers and disabled Ipv6. Still this site will not load in Firefox/Safari/Camino with

Have you tried another one? DNS servers run on software, like anything else: they're not perfect. The first one you're using might need to be rebooted, or it might have other problems.

Initially I only used the router's DNS 192.168.1.1 and later configured the two public DNS servers. Since they work in reversed order the second one (208.67.222.222) will act first or at least that's what these guys claim

I've only tried the first two since I can't do anything about the router which is supplied by the ISP, in my case Telecom Italia.

When I ping their address it fails, so they're probably not responding to pings. I can get to their site (Safari) though, so it's got to be your DNS.

I've also scored a partial success with Safari 4beta downloading something like 54 out of 92 items very slowly and between 3 am and 5 am local time (now it's almost 10 pm here. Firefox will load a couple of color shades from the site while Camino stays blank. No problem loading the site with my two laptops in Win XP and Win Vista, respectively, with the same router.

Sorry, a syntax error in my previous post. Here's the correct result:

The above shows that you can download the main HTML of the page www.mia.com.mk very quickly - a total time of 0.184 seconds.
This doesn't load any of the images etc that might be on that page - those are done via separate requests to the server (maybe different servers - check the "Activity" window in Safari when you try to go to that page).

After 5 minutes of loading in Safari 4beta I get the usual grey background with the three grey stripes on top (no images and/or text) while Activity window shows this:

Those are just the URLs of the separate files that that site needs to download to show its full content.
But the interesting part is what you didn't show us - what Safari's Activity window shows on the right side about the status of each of these.

I edited your post above to put the status info on the lines next to the URLs.
You need to look at the URLs that didn't come through and investigate why they are slow - e.g. using the 'debug_http' script on those URLs.

The fact that the "starttransfer" elapsed times shown in the above results are so large would seem to indicate that the problem is at the server (not on your machine).
The "connect" and "pretransfer" times are quite short, so that shows that your machine has no problem in connecting to the server.
But the server seems to sit there for a while before starting to send you the files requested. I have no idea what would cause this problem - but it seems to be on the server side and hence nothing you can do about it.

On the other hand, I seem to have no problem in getting those files from the server - for example:
Do you always have this problem with this site, or is it only sometimes? Maybe the server is overloaded sometimes.

I've always had this problem with this server right from the very first time I tried to access it which was from another site's link, then from a Google search, etc. Summing it up, I sit in the same room, use the same ISP and router, and never have a problem loading the site in Win XP/Win Vista with my two laptops, but never have made it in Mac. No firewall incorporated in my AV soft and no problem loading other sites in Mac. Just this one.

Some things to try (to see if they fix the problem):
- disable your anti-virus software
- log in as a different (preferably freshly-created) user
- disable all 3rd-party utilities that might affect networking
