[Seems to me that -- rather than being a whole different story -- those answers would be slightly more germane to this thread than one's penchant for vinyl.]

As a blissfully satisfied iTMS consumer, i'd sincerely like to learn what features i'm missing out on unawares.

I wish it were more like Steam. If I purchase something digitally, it should be marked on my account so I can transfer it to other devices computers that I own through some sort of account verification. Furthermore, it should also keep track of what I buy so if my HD crashes and I don't have a recent back up, I can pull what I already paid for from the ITMS.

I also don't like being forced into formats, but luckily I think AAC is a decent format when comparing quality to compression. However, if given a choice I would download albums in FLAC and convert to smaller files for portable devices.

If you have ever used steam, once you log into your account you can access everything you purchased from multiple computers, however you cannot be logged in at two computers at once. You, use several computers, load the steam client, authenticate and bam you got access to everything you purchased. Never need to worry about losing or scratching CDs, it is always available and if you want to uninstall anything off your computer you can do so and still download it and play the game again later on.

I don't like how I am limited with the ITMS. I use iTunes to transfer to my music to my iPod and iPhone but I hardly ever use it otherwise. I also hate how it organizes music for me, as I have a very specific way I like to organize my music on my computer.

I admit I am not the demographic Apple is shooting for as their customer, so I don't feel that Apple is really doing all that wrong per se.

I can't be sure about Madonna, but I will take some issue with what you say about Michael Jackson. Hip Hop dancing was forever changed because of that guy (and music videos for that matter). His music was no different, he took funk and turned it into modern pop. Most major pop acts these days can be traced straight back to him. Madonna I can't speak for because she seems to have followed after Michael, but Michael was a huge shift in the music industry.

One of the problems when one talks about musical/cultural influences between, say, the Beatles and Madonna, is that the Beatles influenced everyone. I can't tag Madonna's influence at all, except female pop stars who look like they should be soliciting johns on the street corner. I understand Lady Gaga is real talented, but she looks like a fashion victim to me.
Oh come on . Trust me, I know how you feel, but isn't that just a bit of a low blow? I won't argue that Michael or Madonna are more influential than the Beatles (that would be heresy!). But saying that the only thing Madonna infused into the pop would was slutty dress? Certainly there was more than that. Again, I can't speak for Madonnas influence because I'm not terribly familiar with her music and so I can't pick out the influence when I listen to modern female pop stars. But considering how big she's been, I'm sure there is some influence, I just don't know how much.

And one of the biggest reason for the Beatles' influence--apart from the fact that they were geniuses--is that the music industry was not splintered as it is now. There is a certain fan base that worships Madonna. The rest are divided between the dozens of sub-genres that exist today. Back then, there was basically one unified fan base. When Sgt. Pepper came out in the Summer of 1967, it was blaring from everyone's windows. This can't be said for any of today's musicians, I don't think. Or so I've read.
I'd agree. And I think this is a very good summary of why it's difficult for an artist to be as influential today as the Beatles where back then. And honestly, you'll never hear me argue that any band was more influential than the Beatles (better maybe, but not more influential). All I'm saying is that Michael is up there as well.

PS -- As a side note, I have the better part of both Michael Jackson and the Beatles collected works and I am a huge fan of both artists. I only mention this to point out that I'm not partial to either, I just want to set things straight.

I was going to go with the original Gregorian Chanters, they were mostly boys anyway. Different purpose in why they did what they did though...

PS -- I remember way back when I was 16 (so, like, 11 years ago), I was sitting in a theatre listening to "Hey Jude" and enjoying myself whilst waiting for some movie to come on the screen. When the Beatles song ended I heard the most ridicoulous thing I've ever heard a DJ say.

"Now we're going to play some music from *****. They're a boyband with a twist, they play their own instruments!"

I thought the world was coming to an end :D.

It did make me think, how could Nsync, the BackStreet Boys and 98 degrees actually be "boy bands". Band? What band?
