Safari In Reverse

Does anyone have a solution to Safari 3.2.1 crashes?
I have tried nearly every suggested fix and nothing has helped.
Should I trash 3.2.1 and go back to an earlier version?

trevor 01-20-2009 01:35 PM

Whoa! Slow down here. I don't think that there's any systemic problem with Safari 3.2.1 that is affecting everybody. Perhaps there is a problem with Safari 3.2.1 on your computer, but that's a wholly different matter. Safari 3.2.1 certainly works flawlessly on my computer.

Are you using any Safari InputManager plugins? That's the most likely cause of your crashes. Either update those plugins to the newest versions, or (better yet) remove them completely from your computer.

If that doesn't fix the problem, launch the app named Console, which is found in /Applications/Utilities, and click the "Logs" button in the button bar. Then look for a Safari.crash.log, and attach it to this thread as a .txt text file.

Just quoting for support.

I bought PithHelmet, a Safari plug-in, and this is the one and only reason that when I updated to Safari 3.2.1 it started crashing with annoying regularity.

My solution was to uninstall PithHelmet, despite there being several threads stating that there is now a *fix* which stops Safari 3.2.1 crashing. So far I haven't been successfull in applying any *fix*.

There are a few alternatives to PithHelmet ... SafariBlock for example ... :)

Safari Crash log

Trevor, thanks for your reply.
I found the Safari Crash log, but it is too large to attach.
I think you are onto something.

I hate to start the browser wars, but why not just use Firefox? I've mostly found that it works much faster than Safari without crashers.

The only problematic thing is that sometimes Firefox drops images on some blogs. I don't know why, but if I refresh the page, the images come right back.

Try opening up the Safari Crash log in TextEdit (or any other text editor of your choice) and selecting only the two or three most recent crashes, then save the shortened log to your Desktop. That should make it short enough to attach.

If you can create a new user account really quick and log in as that new user account, then try Safari. The problem goes away and Safari works then we can more safely assume it is a user level preference issue with Safari and your current user account.

Safari Crash Log Attachment

1 Attachment(s)
Please find the attached crash log in partial form. I am not sure what any of it means.

I am also going to try setting up a new user account.

Thanks,

Nicole

What happened with your brand new user?

I don't see any smoking guns in the crash log, perhaps someone more skilled than myself at reading crash logs will be able to see more.

One thing of which I am rather suspicious is the HP driver stuff. Do these problems not occur if you
1. Power off the computer and HP printer(s).
2. Unplug the HP printer(s).
3. Boot the computer.

I thumbed through the log briefly and I see references to plug ins, do you have any third party plug ins installed for Safari?

Did you try the new user account?

NicoleDDD 01-23-2009 02:58 PM

Hi there. Thanks for helping me. I tried a new user account and that did not help. I just unplugged my HP printer and did a reboot. So I am kind of testing right now. I have a bunch of Internet Plug-Ins, but I am not sure which ones are third party. I'll do a screen grab of the contents and send an attachment.

Internet Plug-Ins

Attached is a screen grab of my Internet Plug-Ins folder.

Here's the attachment (I hope)

The first attachment did not go through. Hope this one works. Bear with me please.

What kid of Mac is it? What model, intel or PPC? Also do you experience the same thing with any other browser? Like Firefox, Opera, or Camino?

NicoleDDD 01-23-2009 03:17 PM

Mac PowerBook G4, 1.67 GHz PowerPC with 1.5 GB SDRAM and I'm running Leopard 10.5.6. In July I had a new hard drive installed and the logic board replace. I have a DSL connection. This baby should be humming! Explorer will not load properly. I'll try Opera or Camino.

tlarkin 01-23-2009 03:22 PM

Well I can't say I use safari that much beyond my iPhone, I am a firefox man through and through. However, I do know that flash runs like junk on Macs right now and I hate it.

Realplayer, I don't use it and I avoid using it. Personal preference thing.

Flip4Mac I use at work on all of our laptops, never had an issue with it.

The rest of them I am not sure you may try trashing some of those plugins just for grins and see what happens.

"WARNING: SUID file" Message During Permission Repair

I just ran permissions repair and found some warnings like this:

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/setregion" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Permissions differ on "Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls/

Does the "will not be repaired" message mean trouble? What can I do about it?

tlarkin 01-23-2009 04:35 PM

I am not sure, fix permissions is a two sided blade. It cuts both ways. The items in question should never be changed from what they originally were. Really, repair permissions is suppose to fix permissions issues with your home directory nothing else really.

It doesn't have the power (and I think it never should by design) to alter anything in a Unix level directory like /usr, or /System, or /Library

VirtualTracy 01-23-2009 05:12 PM

Apple has this document:

Mac OS X 10.5: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions reports issues with SUID files

I haven't read through this whole post so I'm not sure if you're running Leopard?

Regarding your specific Warnings, they aren't listed in that Apple doc so I can't say 100% for sure that they are safe to ignore ... someone more cluey or simply better informed will need to step in. :)

NicoleDDD 01-23-2009 05:28 PM

VirtualTracy,

Thanks for the link to the SUID page. Good advice. It said it is safe to ignore the warnings.
