MacWorld 2009 Reactions / (Mac Rumors Live feed from Keynote)

I was watching the feed from MacRumorslive.com of the Keynote speech, and then the messages started getting very silly, and then their server went down!

ArcticStones 01-06-2009 01:08 PM

.
I am unable to get any contact with MacRumors.

Anyone know of an alternative site with live coverage?

Come to think of it, I guess the keynote is almost over now.
A link to Apple’s keynote video that will be posted, anyone?

Malenfant 01-06-2009 01:10 PM

Yeah those wacky 4channers

Photek 01-06-2009 01:53 PM

they probably did us a favor.... WHAT A LET DOWN.... iWork09.. iLife09 and a 17" MacBook Pro.... oh.. and iTunes DRM free...

Yaaaawwwnnnnnnn

I think Steve is keeping the interesting announcements for himself ;)

tlarkin 01-06-2009 02:00 PM

8 hour battery life my foot too! I bet its 8 hours on the lowest back light settings with WiFi turned off running 1 application, a text editor.

I get maybe 2.5 to 3 out of how I like to run my MBP.

The key to the keynotes is to stop reading the pre-show rumors. The letdown has been much less since I started doing that.

The new features in iLife are great, the new MacBook Pro 17" battery is innovative...but still...Apple has just announced a really fascinating line of products that I unfortunately have no real use for whatsoever in terms of replacing what I have now. Glad I got my 15" before the new ones came out, and I'll just sit out a few rounds until Apple gets through all these awkward, silly transitions like the flip-flop on the anti-glare, the crippling partial DisplayPort adapter support, and the ridiculous combination of nonremovable MBP battery with no licensing of MagSafe so that third parties can help out.

I must confess that I am impressed.
In fact, WiFi off, running MS Word with low back light setting -- that’s exactly how I prefer to use my current PowerBook when travelling.

And if that yields 7–8 hours of battery time, I will think of it as a quantum leap! :)

What seemed totally missing from Phil’s keynote was iPhone sales.
Prediction: an Apple Media Event dedicated to the iPhone within 15 March. Make that ultimo February...

HAve they covered that in the past? I didn't think iPhones were covered at Macworld.

I agree.
The offensive post that was merged into this one has now been moved to the Moderators Only section.

8 hours, yeah right, Apple says you can get 4 hours out of the current one and I can't. I will believe it when I use one for 8 hours!

styrafome 01-06-2009 02:43 PM

I just wish Apple would ask if we cared about the compromises they made to achieve their innovations. Would I prefer a removable battery, or to have it so thin you can't have a removal mechanism for the battery? Light is good, but I don't need it that thin, I'd trade thinness for a removable battery.

So they didn't originally have an anti-glare option on the low end because then they couldn't have that all-glass front? (If you choose non-glare on the new 17" you get a metal bezel.) Well I don't care about the all-glass front.

It's fine if Apple wants to do all this to the 17", but if their lengthening list of compromises still exist on the 15" when I have to replace mine, I don't want to be in the position of buying the next Mac laptop because I have to, instead of because i want to. It would seriously make me think about getting the right PC laptop hardware and putting OS X on it.

tlarkin 01-06-2009 02:56 PM

Yeah looking at the 25 or so failed batteries in my office right this moment, removable batteries are a good thing. What happens when the built in one fails?

the old ups van comes round to pick your macbook up

on another note, does john whats his name (the guy that does the guided tours) actually work at an apple retail store?

If you ask me, the problem is that nobody will ever think another MacWorld or WWDC keynote is interesting until they do something that is more interesting than the iPhone. And honestly, they can't do that every time. They can't even do it ever other time, or every fourth time.

As for me, I'm happy to see iLife '09 and iWork '09. I'm curious about the improvements in battery technology that allowed them to get 8 hours out of that thing... We'll have to wait and see.

PS -- And quite frankly, the DRM free thing is amazing! Thank goodness somebody finally got their heads on straight. We've been strangled under DRM for how long now? I'd think we should all throw a party for Apple, for finally seeing sense and then talking it into all the major labels. That's amazing!

biovizier 01-06-2009 04:43 PM

Very clever of the hackers, deleting all of the MacMini refresh and Snow Leopard announcements. I'm impressed with how thorough they were.

wdympcf 01-07-2009 12:49 AM

Pardon me for disagreeing with the disenfranchised mob, but I think this was a great keynote. DRM free iTunes Music Store and iLife '09 made it very much worthwhile for me.

I refuse to by DRM'd music, I don't pirate music, and I don't buy CDs anymore (I refuse to get stuck with 8 dogs just to get one or two good songs). As you can imagine, this limits my options slightly when most of the music available for download has DRM attached to it. iTunes Music Store going DRM free is great news for me! I just wish they had also announced deals with all the movie studios to sell HD movies and not just rent HD. I would like to buy my movies in HD through my AppleTV rather than buy the SD versions. Ah well... it will come eventually.

Even better is the release of iLife '09. In particular, they've turbo charged iMovie and added back all of the features from iMovie 6 HD that I could possibly have missed. And they've added more - Apple doesn't hype it up on the product page, but iMovie '09 can do picture-in-picture and green screen in addition to the 19 one-click effects and fast-forward, slow-motion and reverse. My home videos just got a whole lot more fun (or they will, once I get my hands on the new software). The face detection they've added to iPhoto looks pretty cool too - although it does negate a lot of the tagging that I've already done!

Mikey-San 01-07-2009 12:58 AM

I also think it was a solid keynote. New notebook, DRM-free music across the board (PROTIP: THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT), and big updates to some major apps. iMovie in particular is looking pretty slick here, and there are interesting things going on with the progression of iWork and introduction of iWork.com.

tlarkin 01-07-2009 09:55 AM

I won't be amazed until I get my Prosumer Mac Midtower desktop, or I can easily and legally (even though as it looks EULAs don't hold a ton of legality in certain areas) load OS X on my PCs. I also want more game developers for OS X.

Until then I just think they keep improving their own products which is nothing new or that real amazing to me personally.

As for the DRM free music, that is great, but iTunes still sucks in my view, haha, I know I am hard to please.

I think I am the same... but there is talk of some announcements around Jan 20th/21st...

As for OSX on any PC.... I hope that never happens....
OSX is great because it is a niche product... (lack of virus writers for starters) One of the reasons Windows sucks is because it has to please all the people all of the time.... and be all things to all men...

Anyway... I would like to see an 8Core MacBook Pro... :)
