Know your nineties?

If you were into alternative music back in the early nineties you may be able to help me. I found these two tracks at the end of an old tape. They were unnamed and I have looked through my vinyl and no longer have the EP they came from. I'm vaguely remembering a black, white and pink cover but that could be something else entirely. Can anyone identify the band and track names?

Track 1
Track 2

Jay Carr 11-26-2008 09:43 PM

Hrm...no idea. You might try typing the lyrics into Google though. I've found many old songs that way...

fazstp 11-26-2008 10:21 PM

Yeah, tried that... nada.

Hal Itosis 11-26-2008 10:27 PM

Are they an Aussie band... or from where?
[listened, but neither sound at all familiar]

fazstp 11-26-2008 10:47 PM

I was thinking they were American but just listening to the accent you could be right about them being Aussie. Doesn't seem to matter where a band is from they all sing with an American accent. That would explain the lack of online lyrics. Aussie band lyrics tend to be harder to come by.

macosnoob 11-26-2008 11:20 PM

I wonder whether an audio fingerprinting app such as Shazam, http://www.shazam.com, would work? There's a free iPhone version available.

There.are.so.many.bands.in.this.world.

I only discovered Silverchair yesterday (thanks to Nicole Kidman's "celebrity" playlist).
Picked up a couple of cool tracks... so far: "Israel's Son", "Undecided", "Abuse Me",
"Across The Night", "Tuna In The Brine" and "Straight Lines". Great stuff!

They're totally unknown over here (AFAIK).

blubbernaut 11-27-2008 04:29 AM

There sure are. I already tried the great audio recognition iPhone app Midomi, but it didn't get them.

ThreeDee 11-27-2008 05:57 PM

Just used Tunatic (another fingerprinting app for OS X) on the tracks. It identified almost every song I threw it, except for your two tracks. :P

ArcticStones 11-27-2008 06:47 PM

.
Never heard ’em before, but all the same I felt nostalgic listening. :)

fazstp 11-27-2008 08:43 PM

Speaking of nostalgia, came across this in my search: Melbourne Punk Directory

Anti 11-28-2008 04:25 AM

Shazam comes up negative. I tried.

The voice reminds me of Depeche Mode, though. Are you sure this isn't eighties?

It's probably somewhere in the 85-92 range. I think it was a 12" vinyl EP. Probably never released on CD so there wouldn't be too many digitised copies around to match up with.

Yeah, excellent. Watched all 3 parts, which led to finding "The Dissociatives".

Thanks! (i still don't get how they transitioned from hard/heavy rock to pop genius,
but it worked out fine, sounds like [to me]).

Half those tracks are golden, but #8 is probably the most fun (along with the vid): "Young Man, Old Man"
[apparently also available at iTunes (for $2): http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/M...o?id=81751678]

How about Something for Kate? Have they managed to break through over there?

Hal Itosis 11-30-2008 11:35 PM

iTunes has but one song of theirs: "The Killing Moon" (... a re-mix apparently),
which occupies the last track on a compilation called "Freak Show Disco, vol. 1".

I was never a huge Dissociatives fan but that song, is my favourite too. I like the guitar solo at the end.

I *think* that Paul Mac (the other half of The Dissociatives) was a big help to Daniel Johns, emotionally, and the Dissociatives was born out of this bond.

I'm not a Paul Mac fan at all, but like the collaboration between them. Paul also plays keyboards at Silverchair concerts.

I wanted to PM you Hal, but you have this feature disabled. Could you temporarily enable it?

Wow.
They were huge here in the 90's, all over the radio. They were all kids back then too, so we thought it was bizarre they played so well.

Not a big fan of PM.
Why... is it X-rated?

[i spent a minute trying to enable it, but couldn't find the right page.]

That's disappointing. They have like 17 albums/EPs listed in the Aus store.

Just had a listen to that track and it's not really representative of their work being a remix of a cover of an Echo and the Bunnymen track.

My first thought when I saw how young Silverchair were back then was ... "who is really playing those instruments?" ... but credit where credits due ... Daniel Johns is one brilliant songster and vocalist/guitarist ;)

I still really love their first single too; "Tomorrow" from Frogstomp ..

I was shocked to hear that Daniel Johns was beaten up so much back in those days, for being the front person in a seriously popular band ...

Hal Itosis 12-04-2008 01:17 AM

Had to post this due to its time-limited nature... but
this was a big part of my listening in the "nineties":

entire Eric Johnson album "Ah Via Musicom"
(all 11 tracks) On Sale for $4.99 this week!!!
[check it out if you don't have it, hurry up]

I went to Amazon and had a listen to the samples ... sounded interesting!

Amazon: "Ah Via Musicom"

Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover - YouTube

Totally awesome tone and technique! Me like ;)

This is also worth a look:

So it's been a while since I posted this question. Anyone come across these tracks since then?

Track 1 excerpt
Track 2 excerpt

Still can't remember who they are. No hits searching on the lyrics either.

freelunch 12-01-2010 05:32 AM

My best guess would be Midnight Oil...

renaultssoftware 12-01-2010 06:51 AM

Not at all familiar. If it were Christian, maybe so :p

capitalj 12-01-2010 10:07 AM

Another unhelpful response. It reminds me of music I was listening to in the late '80s and early-to-mid 90's, but I'm not sure if it's familiarity or just nostalgia. I hope somebody can provide the answer, because now I want to know.
