Problem with accessing a Windows network shared folder on a Mac
Currently a few of the Art users in my company who are using PowerMac G5 with OS X 10.4 and up, they are having difficulties accessing a Windows Server 2003 Network shared folder.
These G5 Macs have no problem connecting to that Windows server and opening other shared folders, but only a particular folder is non-accessible. This particular folder is located in an External Hard disk connected to the server. And the funny thing is other users on PowerMac G4 OSX 10.3 have no problem at all. Before last week those G5 Mac users also have no problem accessing that particular folder, but this week when they clicked on it nothing happened. I am not really a Mac expert, would there be some settings on the Mac to allow it to view that folder? Any help would be appreciated. |
Get the people who can "see" the folder to display its permissions (if they can). It may be that the later version of OSX handles the permissions differently.

Problem is the MAC users can see the shared folder, but when they clicked onto it to view the files inside, it was all empty (no files there, and empty folders; but supposedly there should be files inside)
Those users also reported that sometimes they can view the files, but most of the time can't. Double-checked permission on Windows server, all those users have read&write access, plus no limit on # of users viewing that shared folder. It was weird... |
I'm having a similar problem. I have a PC desktop (running Windows XP Home) and I'm trying to share a folder (and its subfolders) on the PC with a MacBook running OS X Leopard. I can access the shared folder from the MacBook just fine, but when I go into some of the subfolders, they show up as empty even though, in actuality, they have lots of files/pictures in them. Let me know if you figure out this problem. Thanks.

Vista to Mac
OS 10.5.5 on PPC mac. Have a Compaq Laptop with win vista. I know but my wife loves windoz. The lap top was sent in for repairs and came back with Vista reloaded and all her stuff gone. I use to be able to access her pc from my mac. Found that the ip address was changed. Under network her pc does not show up. If I click on "connect to" with the new ip address I'm asked for administrator user name and password. Nothing I put in works. I do not know much about vista. Any one know how to set this up?

same problem
just echoing my same experience. Windows XP machine has a shared drive. Mac can connect to that via the smb:\\ip address.
Mac can see the highest-level folders and files, but sees zero files inside any of those high-level folders. 10.5.6 on mac, windows xp pro sp3 on other workstation. Note: have at least 2 shares on the Windows machine. "C" drive shows all files and all nested files and folders on the Mac. "J" drive shows only high-level folders and files - nothing is seen below those and that is the problem. Share configurations of those 2 shares appears to be identical. -=theta=- |
Same problem here
Just wondered if anyone had found a solution to this problem yet?

what about cifs?
How are the Macs trying to mount the shared folder?
Tell them to try COMMAND-K (or use Connect to Server in the Finder's Go menu. Code:
cifs://username@4.2.2.2Does that work? |

Got the answer!
You MUST connect as a registered user using the same user name and password as you use to log onto your PC. Then you will see the subfolders and files. So, on your macbook: connect to the PC by either selecting the machine name from the 'shared' area in the bar or select from the menu: Go->Connect to Server and put in the server address e.g smb://192.168.1.4. if you are "connected as: Guest", click "Connect as..., select 'Registered User', modify the name to be the same user as is on your PC (note: OS X will put in a default name for you here and it can be (and was in my case) incorrect). Put in the PC password for that account. You can select to store this info in your keychain so you don't have to enter it each time you connect to the server. Click 'Connect'. Now when you open up folders on the PC share through the Mac you will see subfolders and files. Regards, /Brian |
