USB ethernet adapter
Does anyone know why, after i search the internet for drivers for a usb-to-ethernet adapter, and finally find the website that has the drivers, (http://www.sustworks.com/site/news_usb_ethernet.html) and install them, that i am unable to share internet with it from the ethernet connection on my macbook. Can anyone tell me step by step how to configure internet sharing so that my xbox can connect through the internet on my usb-to-ethernet adapter? I appreciate any help... thank you!
|
Have you checked that it isn't the firewall that is causing you problems? (Test by disabling the firewall temporarily.)
What version of OS X do you have? Note that it would be much better to just buy a router box and use that to share your Internet connection. |
I am using the latest version of leopard. And i am trying to find how to turn off the firewall but i cant seem to find it, because i went to system preferences>>security>>firewall, and it says allow all incoming connections. And i know it would be much better to use a router but my circumstances will not allow that. Any ideas on what is happening?
|
i guess no1 knows what is going on?
|
Routers work better and they're cheap, so most people don't use internet sharing. The percentage of the few who do that also use a USB to ethernet adapter has got to be small.
|
ok thats grand, obviously if i could use a router i would. Great input. der. being that i already stated that it is not possible for me to use a router. Learn to read. Does anyone have any solutions besides telling me that i should use a router?
|
In my opinion, what is going on is that you're trying to use "Internet Sharing", which is just a bad kludge. Perhaps try to find an inexpensive used router from a friend, or on craigslist or something, if the cost of a router is too high. You really will be much much better off with a router, as that is the right way to do this. "Internet Sharing" is never the right way to do anything, unless it's just a temporary thing.
If there is some reason other than cost that you can't use a router, please tell us what that is. And by the way, insulting people who are trying to help you is rarely a good way to get help. Continuing with that kind of behavior is not likely to get you very far at all. Trevor |
well it would be like you saying hey, I want to get to work, can some1 tell me the best way that i can get to work, but it cant be by car. And then I go and say well getting to work by car is the best way to get to your work. You can buy a used one for relatively cheap. And then you say I know that is the best way but i just said that a car will not fit into my circumstances. And then another person saying oh yea the car the best way to go. Like what does it matter why i cant use a router, the bottomline is i cant. So can some1 help me please, about how i can share my ethernet connection, with my usb adapter so that my xbox can get online. Because currently in order for my xbox to come online, i have to restart my computer into bootcamp and run windows, b/c it works perfectly with windows. And i want to elminate the fact that everytime i want to play xbox that i have to restart my computer.

The problem is that since routers are so cheap and so easy, almost everyone uses them. (So what you are asking is like asking how to walk somewhere in Los Angeles - people don't do that - they drive.)
And setting up things like Internet connection sharing for this sort of thing is fraught with problems and so few people do it. I've never tried to do it on my Leopard machine - I've done it in the past on Tiger machines and there it was necessary to configure the firewall to open the ports that you want to use - i.e. the ports used by the applications running on the other machine that is sharing your connection. In your case this is the XBox Live I guess. Good luck - you'll need to research this a bit more. Maybe you can come back and report on what worked for the benefit of future readers. |

Looking back over quinney019's posting history, I see that he/she had asked more or less the same question in October 2007: http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?p=416376
And one of quinney019's posts in that older thread seems to indicate why the "circumstances will not allow that": Quote:

Thanks dad!!! Like i love it, you guys are putting more effort into ****in looking up my posting history, and telling me that routers are better than actually helping me to solve my problem! Its unreal! I FULLY ****IN UNDERSTAND THAT ROUTERS ARE BETTER!!!! I USE MY ETHERNET ADAPTER WITH BOOTCAMP TO GET ON XBOX LIVE AND IT WORK 100% PERFECT!! OBVIOUSLY THIS IS UNCHARTERED WATERS OR MY GOOGLE SEARCHES WOULD HAVE SOLVED MY PROBLEMS!!! like you guys are hippocritical, you are here to help yet you are too busy looking at my old posts and telling me SOMETHING THAT I FULLY AWARE OF! And if you think that I am trying to "cheat" my school network, than you are wrong, b/c everyone with a windows computer can use the ethernet adapter for online gaming! And i came here to see if there is a mac solution to this, so i do not have to restart my god damn computer every time i want to play my xbox! God damn i feel like i am a broken record saying the same ****.

You don't seem to realize that:
1) I don't know how to solve your problem since I don't have experience with your situation 2) I was compelled to look up your posting history since you failed to explain your situation. The "why" of a question is often more important than the question itself. And I'm not much motivated to help someone who doesn't cooperate when asked for more info (especially about the "why") or who seems to be hiding something. 3) Just because people (with Windows) have found something that works (to connect their XBoxes) doesn't mean that this is something that is approved by your school's network administrators. Or have you asked them if this is acceptable? |
Yes in fact the way we found out that it worked was that we had an guy from our school's IT department come set it up. and then we all followed suit once we saw that it worked and that it was ok with our school.
|
1) So now that we're talking, maybe you want to explain just why it is that the simple solution via a router won't work for you?
2) And if you want to figure out why the connection sharing via this Ethernet adapter isn't working, start with the following: - does the Ethernet port provided by this adapter actually work (just as Ethernet, not for Internet for your XBox)? E.g. can you use this adapter instead of the built-in Ethernet as your main connection to wherever you connect for your Internet connection. - when you connect the XBox via this adapter, can you 'ping' the XBox from your Mac? - does the XBox get an IP address assigned via DHCP? Which DHCP server? What IP address does it get? Is it a self-assigned address in the 169.xxx region, or is it in the same subnet as your Mac's IP address, or what? |
I have seen this setup, but wireless instead of with usb-to-ethernet. You simply hook your laptop into Ethernet, and switch your Airport into Access-Point mode. You have to have the wireless adapter for the XBox, but then you simply associate it with your AP, and your good to go.

Ok
1) No I am not able to use the usb adapter in place of my built in ethernet connection. For some reason the adapter does not recognize it (no lights turn on, on the adapter or anything) 2)I connected the xbox to my adapter when I was in Mac OS X and was unable to ping the xbox, but was able to ping the adapter at the IP that it gave in my Network Settings 3) I am not sure if my Xbox gets an IP via DHCP, but I will give you all the info i collected from both my windows partition(where this setup actually works) and from Mac OS X(where the setup does not work) Windows: Local Area Connection(my main ethernet connection coming from the wall to my ethernet port on my macbook): IP: 130.49.59.18 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 130.49.59.1 DHCP Server: 136.142.10.167 DNS: 136.142.57.10,136.142.188.76 Connection is being firewalled and shared USB Adapter(connects into usb and ethernet cord goes from adapter right to xbox): IP: 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Information from Network Settings on my XBox: IP Setting: Automatic IP: 192.168.0.151 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.0.1 DNS Settings: Automatic DNS: 192.168.0.1 Mac OS X: Built-In Ethernet (My main connection from the wall to the ethernet port on my macbook): Configure: Using DHCP IP: 130.49.59.18 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router: 130.49.59.1 DNS: 136.142.57.10, 136.142.188.76 USB Adapter(connects into usb and ethernet cord goes from adapter right to xbox): "Self-Assigned IP" Configure: Using DHCP IP: 169.254.90.110 Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 Info from network settings on the Xbox: IP Settings: Automatic IP: 169.254.138.214 Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 DNS: 0.0.0.0 Just as a note, I was playing around with all the settings before I came to this forum. And what i did was, I went into windows, connected to xbox live, and wrote down the IPs and what not from the xbox. I then went back into Mac OS X and manually typed them into the USB ethernet adapters network settings and the connection from the ethernet adapter said "Connected" in the network settings window, but xbox would still not connect to xbox live. |
It sounds to me like your Ethernet adaptor just doesn't work - maybe the drivers aren't working well enough (a common problem with hardware that is developed primarily for Windows machines and then made available for the Mac as an afterthought). You need to get it working as Ethernet before you try anything fancier like connection sharing.
|
Well here's the thing, I have been playing around with this. And all the info i told you, I copied down on a piece of paper. and what i did was I entered the ip and subnetmask of the usb connection in windows the same way into the usb connection on the mac. And then manually put in the info from the xbox when it is connected to xbox live when im on windows, when it is connected to my mac, and i tested te connection on the xbox and it confirmed the ip address and then failed when it came to the dns server

Yes i tried this, but it does not work. Its weird when my xbox connects when im in windows Gateway, and DNS are the same on the xbox
|
Then try third party DNS servers, such as those maintained by OpenDNS: http://www.opendns.com/
Trevor |
Na i dont that will work either, because i cant replace my current DNS servers with the ones from that website b/c it will not let me edit my dns server list for my built-in ethernet connection
|
I just dont understand this, the setting are exactly how they are on windows, the IP address passes on the xbox, but the DNS wont? I dont understand
|
So are there any other solutions to this mess? or is this it?

my built in ether connect will not let me replace the DNS servers it currently uses with the ones from opendns.com. It will only let me add DNS servers
