Bluetooth File Exchange problem

I can't send files to or from my Nokia phone. When I use my phone to send a file to my Macbook Pro, it says 'Unable to connect'. When I use my Mac to send a file to my Nokia phone, the phone simply doesn't recognise it and the Mac simply keeps 'connecting to device' forever. Anyone knows how to fix this?
Thanks

what phone you got

At least one carrier: Verizon hobbles bluetooth so that you are forced to use their network to transfer files.

Instead of sending a file from the Mac to the phone, try "Browse Device" in the Bluetooth menu item on your Mac. Then drag and drop files between Mac and phone.

pkmntrainerharry 07-29-2008 10:09 AM

still cannot

I tried already.

When i tried to browse the device and found it and started to connect, this appears:
"The remote device is not responding."

I tried so many times and the same message keeps appearing. The phone is not doing anything else.

My phone is Nokia N73.

Thanks

And who is your carrier? I doubt that Verizon is the only company in the world to hobble Bluetooth.

um thanks for the quick reply..

But I don't know what a carrier is. Could you tell me?

Thanks

Who do you pay for your phone service?

pkmntrainerharry 07-29-2008 10:23 AM

... I'm in Singapore, not US... I use Singtel, you probably wouldn't know.. I bought the phone without any contract, so they shouldn't be able to play with the bluetooth right?

They shouldn't be able to, unless you bought it from them. I can't find anything about them hobbling it though. I do see that they don't provide technical support for file sharing. :(

The next thing I would suggest is to go to System Preferences: Bluetooth. Highlight your phone and click the minus sign below so that your Mac forgets about the phone. Then pair the phone with the Mac again and see if that works better.

still cannot... i switched my phone to offline mode, tried sending, and got the same results...

has someone using N73 been able to share files with a mac?

markbrooke 07-30-2008 08:09 AM

Have you tried going into sharing settings and making sure bluetooth sharing is turned on and configured properly for your phone? I had a similar problem a while back.

EDIT while looking further into this, It seems its a problem with the phones firmeware. Perhaps this will be a tempory fix? http://europe.nokia.com/A4423135

Photek 07-30-2008 08:20 AM

do you have the latest driver from Nokia?

http://europe.nokia.com/A4299040

once you have installed that... use Bluetooth assistant to 'pair' the devices, and then use the 'bluetooth' menu in the top right of your Macs screen to 'send file' or 'browse device' VIA your phones name.

pkmntrainerharry 07-31-2008 08:28 AM

N73 doesn't need a driver.. or so they say.. i paired them already, still cannot browse the device, it still says "The remote device is not responding."

Also I cannot use the Nokia Multimedia Transfer from http://europe.nokia.com/A4423135..
I think there's something wrong with the phone... Anyone can share files with an N73?

Actually in the Nokia website they used the screen shots of an N73 to show how to connect to a Mac... I followed the instructions and it doesn't work... Weird.

pkmntrainerharry 07-31-2008 08:33 AM

I found out another thing, when i to add the device through iSync it says "iSync cannot connect to this device."

And since I paired the phone with the Mac I can see the phone in System Preferences/Bluetooth pane, and I see it shift regularly from being connected and not connected like, every 10 seconds? Argh...

pkmntrainerharry 08-03-2008 04:15 AM

... Anyone can help?

That sounds bad, like a major problem. Can you use the bluetooth on the phone with some device other than your Mac? Can your Mac use bluetooth with some device other than your phone?

Red_Menace 08-03-2008 06:59 PM

Good luck with any bluetooth on the MBP. I can barely get my mouse and keyboard to work - they are constantly disconnecting and reconnecting, more so if I actually try to use them. The bluetooth connection seems to have a lower priority than anything else, so if you are running other bluetooth devices or running something in the background, try turning it off.

pkmntrainerharry 08-04-2008 07:37 AM

even worse:
my Nokia N73 has no problem to a Sony Ericsson phone; my Macbook Pro has no problem connecting to the Sony Ericsson phone.

Man, I'm so getting an iPhone as soon as it's released here.
