The car is alive

2 Attachment(s)
I've had my car down for 2 weeks (1 week longer than I had anticipated) for a turbo/injector/intercooler upgrade. Finished buttoning everything up last night and a pal came over this morning and loaded a base OpenECU map into the ECU for the larger injectors and my conversion to a blow-thru MAF.

Working out a couple of bugs, and am currently only running 11 or so psi as I don't have boost control yet.

I really used to dig this stuff, but it's been 7 yrs since I built a car and this will be the last one I do myself. :)

A couple of pics are attached. My website is currently down as the datacenter it's hosted in had a transformer burn up yesterday, so the entire array of images is offline.

Just felt the need to share the love. :)

This is my brother in laws. Not really into cars much myself but since you're sharing.

I inherited my Dad's 1967 Glas 1700 GT and am currently selling it. A real rare gem. Got a few interested parties looking at it. One from the Netherlands, another from the UK, and one down the freeway in Pasadena. Crazy man. ;)

That's a very cool car!

@Photek-- That's the Solaris from TVR, right? Clarkson said that it was the first TVR in some 20 years that actually behaved on the track. I like it's looks, that's for sure.

Sagris... and yeh.. its awesome looking... I was passed by one this morning on the way to work...

I am a big fan of the Tuscan too...

http://www.car-catalog.com/sports_cars/tvr_tuscan.jpg

.... did you know TVR's name comes from the guy that set the company up?... his name is trevor

kel101 06-02-2008 02:24 PM

I want a bugati :D

schneb 06-02-2008 02:28 PM

I think the Tuscan looks better than the Sagris. The Sagris looks like some weird fish that is going into defense mode. ;)

BTW - This Glas GT was designed by the same guy that designed for Maserati (Pietro Frua). No wonder it has such a great line. :)

A bit contrived, but still entertaining to watch!

Jay Carr 06-02-2008 09:28 PM

If you liked that one, you should watch the one where they have a Bugatti race an Airplane from Italy to England..

I'm looking forward to the new Ferrari California. They took the styling of the 599 Fiorana and amped it all up.

Of course, I kind of like the slightly (but only slightly) over the top styling. Granted, I really like the Sagris as well. And, even though it's way over the top, I like the Zonda as well. And while I respect the Bugatti, I'm not a huge fan of the styling. I mean, you could say "who will notice styling at 253mph?" But honestly, will you ever actually have the car going that fast? Granted...I'll never actually own one...so it's all rather academic isn't it?

Personally, I own a Toyota Matrix XRS (or a Toyota Corolla Hatch for those of you not in America.) The XRS part makes it rather fun. Basically it means I have the engine from the old Toyota Celica under the hood. So, I've got a hatch that will do 0-60 in 6.3. But what I really like are the 17" tires, which allow me to corner that hatchback like it's a sedan (or saloon, take your pick). It's a really fun, and practical, car. Don't think I'd take one over a Ferrari California, but hey, my car was only $8,900 or so. And that fits right into my budget :).

I have a Audi A3 2.0TDI... its cool.. even though its a diesel.. its quite quick... especially above 40mph... and it does upto 63mpg... which is very good with diesel prices up to £1.30 at the mo

Jay Carr 06-03-2008 11:51 PM

Is that a 1.30/pint or /gallon? And how do I do the conversion? Over here we're spending about $3.50/gallon. Roughly 1.75 pounds per gallon I guess...

fazstp 06-04-2008 12:38 AM

We're paying between about AU$1.40/ Litre to recently peaking at AU$1.65/ Litre for unleaded

According to my calculations this is about

US$5.05/ Gallon to US$5.95/ Gallon.

( That's if I trust my Calculator.app conversions? AU$/Litre * US$0.953/AU$1 * 1 Litre/ 0.264 Gallon )

Holy moly is that really the conversion rate? I remember it used to be more like US$0.65/AU$1.

well one gallon is roughly 3.8 litres, so you guys are getting petrol a lot cheaper than we are

Photek 06-04-2008 03:47 AM

£1.15 per litre for petrol..... in the UK... (£1.30 for diesel)

by my maths... the Americans here are paying 92p per litre...!!!

and the Aussies are paying 80p per litre.... !!!

no wonder we are referred to as 'treasure island' !

fazstp 06-04-2008 05:44 AM

Does this look right?

US$3.50/ Gallon * 0.264 Gallon/ Litre * £0.509/ US$

£0.47/ Litre

You might want to sail to the US. We're paying about 80p as per your original calculations. But it's 47p in the US. Not sure if that's diesel (Zalister?).

The HMS PhoKel

jsalmi 06-04-2008 04:26 PM

I got the car tuned on a dyno last night. At 18psi it made 362 all wheel hp and 359 torque.

A dyno chart can be seen here. The drive home was fun. :)

kel101 06-05-2008 12:22 PM

perfect :)

jsalmi 06-29-2008 11:02 AM

I got the car dyno tuned for 91 octane and e85.

On 91 octane it made 316 awhp and 317 foot/lbs of torque at 10 psi. Turning the boost up to 18psi made 362 awhp and 359 foot/lbs.

With e85 at 16 psi 394 awhp and 395 foot/lbs, but we were out of the comfort zone with regards to injector duty cycle. Backed off to 10 psi and made 347 awhp and 357 foot/lbs. That's where it sits today.

Dyno charts: 91 octane and e85.

It really gets up and scoots. :)

Jay Carr 06-29-2008 03:25 PM

You did all of that to a Subaru Legacy? Well, there you have it. I'd say that it's a bit odd, but you know, my dream car is a Reliant Robin with about 400hp. Or maybe I'll just attach a giant rocket to it. Though it looks a might bit dangerous.

In all honestly, I'm looking into adding a little omph to my Toyota Matrix. So far I've looked into some cool air induction and perhaps a new header/exhaust combo. I'm not sure about a turbo yet because the gearbox is a bit sketchy and besides that, I don't want to ruin my cars reliability. So, maybe I'll invest in some reinforced pistons before I do anything too stupid... Yeah, it really is fun to take an unassuming car and make it faster than anyone might expect.
