imovieHD 08 issues

hi

I had ImovieHD current version working ok, I D/L from apple the 'free' older version. I assumed it would allow both ie not delete my 08 version

it seemed that way it made a previous version folder however both are the older imoviehd 06

i tried to restore it using the original disks that came w/my mac but restoring imovie dosn't re load it (tried under custom)

i tried to restore the app using my timcapsule/timemachine to a earlier version I notice 2 things one the app won't launch and just looking at the browser for many days 'back ' shows a lot of app icons bad

any clues whats up I must have done something , i did try to remove the .plst for imove

so question how do i get imovieHD 08 /current version back??
o/s=current

i'd really like to run it again

thanks

When you install iMovie HD '06 from Apple's website and run the installer, it first checks that you have iMovie v7 ('08) installed. If so, it proceeds to install iMovie HD ('06) into a folder called "Previous Version."

The "iMovie" in your /Applications folder is version 7.1.1 which is part of the iLife '08 package. The "iMovie HD" in /Applications/Previous Version/ is version 6.0.6 which was part of the iLife '06 package.

hi really appreciate your responce, however it's incorrect, i think what you wrote was 'supposed' to happen but it didn't hence my problem

when i ran both i did a info pannel as well as a 'about' both show ver 6 thats how i knew something was awray

i'd figure a worse case the time machine version should have worked but it won't launch so if i could get that working id be good

tnx

where is ImovieHD 08?

hi

From the install disks that come w/my new mac, i need to re install Imovie HD

sure can't find it

I tried hitting the custom button i can see Imovie and iDVD i tried installing them assuming the installer would put imovie HD on at that point but it didn't.

So anyone know where it is hidden? I really need to reload it

thanks

Please launch the "Terminal" application (under /Applications/Utilities) and copy & paste the following commands (all together), press Return, then copy & paste the results back here so we can see:

find /Applications -maxdepth 3 -type d -name 'iMovie*.app' -print -exec cat {}/Contents/version.plist \;
sysctl -a 2>/dev/null | egrep 'osrelease =|model ='
echo "done"

(This will give us more info about your situation)

Las_Vegas 06-02-2008 01:01 AM

If, in fact you've lost iMovie v7.x, you can restore it with your grey restore DVD that came with your Mac. Just run the "Install Bundled Software Only" package, select "Customize" in the "Installation Type" section to only select "iMovie." This should restore the '08 version of iMovie without removing the iMovieHD ('06).

The above output (the version number in blue) shows that the iMovie that is directly under /Applications is the one from iLife08.

But the part I have coloured in red seems to show that the version plist file (that is inside the iMovie.app bundle) is corrupted - that stuff in red shouldn't be there - at least it isn't there on my version of iMovie from iLife08.

I don't have time to explain how right now, but it should be possible to remove that extra stuff in red from the plist file and that likely will fix the problem.
Maybe someone else will jump in here and explain.

Las_Vegas 06-02-2008 10:54 AM

You should follow my instructions above to replace your /Applications/iMovie.app. This will repair the corruption of that file.

Hi already mentioned, a few times, i had already tried this (several times rebooting and reinstalling ) and it absoluetly doesnt work

trust me that was the first thing i did if it worked i'd be really happy

appreciate the thoughts

i'd be willing to try removing the plist stuff not sure how,to edit it , could i delete the entire plsit? i see more than one in the app pkg not sure if that would be 'bad'

wonder if that would 'do it'

althou what is odd is if i open either app's app pkg and look at the plst files i don't see any ???? and the versions listed in there says 6 i dunno your prob write i am just not savvy

really appreciate everyones help very much

hi

i think that terminal output was reading imovie not imovieHD

when i look at the app pkg for imovie i see 7 but i don't see anything other than 6 for both versions of imovie hd

i could have overlooked something

Okay, I think that I finally understand where the confusion is in this thread!

photo2000a, there is no iMovie HD 7 and there never was. There is only iMovie 7 (otherwise known as iMovie '08, which come with iLife '08) and iMovie HD 6 (which came with iLife '06). I thought it was a typo when you referred to iMovie HD 7 earlier in the thread, but now I'm convinced that's not the case. Apple introduced HD into the iMovie name to emphasize that it was now capable of handling high definition video. I guess they no longer feel that emphasis is necessary.

In reverse chronological order:

iMovie 7 - released with iLife '08
iMovie HD 6 - released with iLife '06
iMovie HD 5 - released with iLife '05
iMovie 4 - released with iLife '04
iMovie 3 - released with original iLife bundle
iMovie 2 - standalone app
iMovie - standalone app

Note that there was no iMovie 6 without "HD" or iMovie 5 without "HD".

ok so here is where i am a bit confused then

out of the box i power up my brand new 15 macbook pro
i load no sofware

looking in apps i see imovie icon has a star clearly its a '08 product

i see imovie HD icon is a clapboard ( assumed) it was also a -08 product

if you are correct then somehow don't ask me, i got a 06 app included (shrugs)?? then i guess when i ran the installer for 06 it somehow got corrupeted seeing 2 of same
this would explain why i now have 2 copies showing 06 (of ImovieHD) the corruped ver and a 'good' one

i guess a logical but incorrect presumption on my behalf
wdympcf, i owe you a big thanks and i owe you one

However, one issue remains if i could ask a second favor

at first i never tried running imovie(star icon) but when i launch imovie it bounces the icon in doc for a while then sits there nothing happens

I think hayne might have discovered why perhaps it's those ??? in there I dunno i never mentioned this cause i was so focused on imovie hd

guess i was mixed up not being to familiar w/the imovie suite

so hopfully what is preventing imove08 from running might be fixable clearly reinstalling it didn't do the trick

hayne suggested removing those ?? char's

thanks again for clearing up that confusion one down one to go

Let's make absolutely sure what the situation is before doing anything.
Please open up another Terminal window and then copy & paste the following (revised) commands and then press Return - and then copy & paste the result back here so we can see:

find /Applications -maxdepth 3 -type d -name 'iMovie*.app' -print -exec echo "-----" \; -exec cat {}/Contents/version.plist \;
echo "done"

Hmm - just as suspected, the situation is more weird than I had initially thought.
The fact that the ??? stuff gets printed out separately (between ----- lines) means that it isn't part of the version.plist. But then I don't understand how it can output that at all.

Let's try again to narrow this down.
Please open up another Terminal window and then copy & paste the following (re-revised) commands and then press Return - and then copy & paste the result back here so we can see:

find /Applications -maxdepth 3 -type d -name 'iMovie*.app' -print -exec echo "-----" \;
echo "done"

And in the meantime, I'd strongly recommend booting from your Install DVD and doing "Repair Disk" (not "Repair Disk Permissions" !) - tell us what results you get from that.

If you re-read hayne's post, you will see that he said to run "Repair Disk" - not "Repair Permissions". They are not the same thing and this does not look like a permissions issue. You would be well-advised to repeat the process with "Repair Disk" this time.

hi

thanks i should have explicitly mentioned that i did a verify and it said 'disk seems ok' so i didn't actually go thru a repair not sure if this was 'ok' procedure

i just mentioned permissions because it wasn't mentioned , the verify went ok except for "acl found but not expected on Library'

I'm still not sure what is going on - I don't understand how you could have gotten the output you showed in post#16.

So let's try again with some different commands to try to understand better.
Please open up another Terminal window and then copy & paste the following (re-revised) commands and then press Return - and then copy & paste the result back here so we can see:

Las_Vegas, I think you must have missed this earlier in this thread. It's not just confusion about iMovie 7 vs iMovie HD 6. iMovie 7 won't launch for photo2000a. I would just reinstall at this point.

hi

thanks all for the help

Very early in the thread i mentioned that i had tried re installing from my disks, but same issue

thou it seems to launch something gets it hung up i was hoping that i t might be a corrupted .plst or something but i dunno

was really hoping that i could run it but not enough to redo the drive.

might be something simple like a corrupted file it is looking for /using

but i do appreciate your taking a swing at it thanks much

Launch the "Console" application (under /Applications/Utilities) and look for relevant error messages. Note that messages are labeled with the date & time so you can use that to locate the part of the log to look at. Copy & paste the relevant messages back here so we can see them.
Be sure to look at system.log as well as console.log (Use the "Logs" button (top-left) to see the various logs available - note that you will probably need to be an "admin" user to see the system.log)

If the log refers to a crash log, press the "Logs" button (top-left) and go into the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter section to find that particular crash log. Copy & paste back here the last portion of that crash log - the part that gives details about the last crash (or preferably attach it as a plain text file, using the "Manage Attachments" button at the bottom when you reply).

imovie logs

hi

i ran imovie waiting a while till the icon stoped bouncing in dock, it 'seems' like it's running but won't show up on screan it's like it's perminately hidden

it dosn't show up as not responding

the logs of which i searched all shows no error messages and no imovie entries

you'd think there would be some entry

i wonder if i get a standalone imovie disk and try to copy/install it from that if it'd work

thanks much

Sorry - I don't know what is going on with your Mac.
I'd try removing the troublesome copy of iMovie and then reinstalling (again) from the DVD that came with your Mac.

Given the misunderstanding between the different versions of iMovie earlier in the thread, I can't say that you've inspired me to confidence. I mean no offense. Could you please detail (and I mean detail) the steps that you took in trying to reinstall iMovie 7 (the one with the star icon that comes with iLife '08)? Start with inserting the disc, tell me what you clicked on, which installer you ran, which options you checked (if any), and everything else up to ejecting the disc.
