Beta testers needed -- new website!

Hey folks, I have a new website I'm putting together for our local Mac Users Group. We just finished the Alpha stage and we need some Beta testers. So, I was hoping some of you would be willing to go to my page, make a user, and then try to break the site.

A quick word of caution though, the site is affiliated with BYU, a religious university in the US. As a result, our forum rules are for more stringent. Here it's okay to post a link and then mention that it's not safe for work. At my site that is not allowed. Any links that would be considered NSFW would get you banned, without warning. I know that takes all the fun out of it Felix, but if you could play by the rules anyway? ;)

Our Beta site!

PS- Please post any thoughts, comments or complaints on the forum on my beta site. I'm not the only one working on it, so posting here would be kind of useless.

Oh shoot.. Is RickRolling allowed at least :D?

NovaScotian 05-21-2008 03:39 PM

Tried to register -- no indication that I would be informed and no email saying I was accepted.

Felix_MC 05-21-2008 03:59 PM

Ok, I manage to register, and I was looking around the site, testing it's limits, and I did see a few glitches, and I was going to post them on the site's forums, but whenever I click on a forum category or try to view a post, this comes up.
Not sure if it's a permission thing or if the forums are down or whatnot, but I though I'd let you know :p

EDIT: I did notice that it does let me go to the "Forum Rules" category, but nowhere else.

Excellent point. It just registers you thus far. I suppose that's not quite the standard is it?

Jay Carr 05-21-2008 04:18 PM

@ Felix -- Okay, I'm working on it. Also, could you change your picture? Sorry...the people who go on this forum are, generally, fairly easily offended.

Edit -- Okay, should be good now.

LOL, I'm intrigued. What's the standard in offensive user icons?

tlarkin 05-21-2008 04:35 PM

sorry, not touching that site, I'll just get banned instantly. Best of luck though, and the lay out looks cool!

Remember the Pilgrims of New England? ;)

fazstp 05-21-2008 04:45 PM

Just out of curiosity, let me know how long your forum's up before you start getting hit by forum spam bots.

Alright, the forums work well now
I've already started posting there ;)
And I changed my pic to something somewhat neutral :p
And btw, the old picture was me :), and it was NOT photoshopped, no matter what some girls that know me might say :D

On linux version of firefox, the page is twice as wide as the screen and the screen is at least 1280 pixels wide (the firefox window about 1080px). It looks like the divs may be confused, assuming you are using divs. I did not look at the source.

Attached are two screen shots...

Sweet a Linux user *virtual high five*

Jay Carr 05-21-2008 04:55 PM

@tlarkin. Oh, but I was hoping to get to test the banning capabilities of the forum! ;). Honestly though, if you can keep it mostly under control, we can use all the feedback we can get.

We've got a webmaster who seems to be the "security first" sort. I'd be surprised if we are ever hit up. But if you see openings, please please tell me. I'd rather not deal with spam bots.

Err, ugg, umm, fine but I can't guarantee I won't get banned, but since you're such a cool dude, and asked me nicely I'll help ya. I guess my user name can't be anything satanic or refers to: rock n roll, dinosaurs, drugs, sex, or anything cool for that matter!

Long after I registered, I did get an email and the rest went fine. Changed PW, changed image, etc. all ok. Not much else to check.

Quoting this for truth. And also because I'll say the same thing.

Jay Carr 05-21-2008 05:23 PM

@Tlarkin -- Dinosaurs are officially okay, and Rock n' Roll is okay as well, so long as it's pre 1960's ;).

We're working on it...honestly, supporting Linux isn't right at the top of our todo list. But, we'll do what we can.

Can anyone else test our site on another operating system or browser? Anyone for Camino or Shiira? Perhaps someone use IE on Windows 98? The more feedback the better.

This won't be useful, but hence you asked, here's what I got in IE 5 under classic environment running OS 9.2.
Similar to the problems in Firefox on Linux :p
Have fun with it ;)

OH, and no Chuck Berry either. Elvis, pre-hips, is as far as we go.

tlarkin 05-21-2008 06:43 PM

the MC5 was real early 60s

Anti 05-21-2008 06:57 PM

Two words.

The Doors. Best band ever, IMO.

tw 05-21-2008 07:16 PM

forum looks nice (though I'll admit I don't like that 'window-within-window' thing - always confuses the heck out of me. and are you sure it's appropriate at BrigYo to have the option 'it looks like crap' on your survey? :)

and that being said, I'm going to cancel my membership. I get enough crap for what I say here; I so much as open my mouth over there and someone's going to send out a death squad.

Well, I'm in charge, so we'll skip the death sentence, eh?

Honestly folks, I'm mostly joking when I talk about them being a bunch of prudes. Skip the pornographic links and don't swear. The rest of the rules are the same as this forum.

@Felix -- Oddly enough there are more things to life than pornography and swearing. Take arson for instance, or video games! And if you like both of them, you can play GTA IV. And, honestly, you can talk about all of those on my forums if you want. Might not get many responses, but there you go :).

well, it's not that, exactly. I just seem to have a knack for annoying people with strong religious or political opinions. I mean, I can't help it if I'm right, can I? but they never seem to understand that. <sigh...>

porn is for guys with no access to (or skill with) girlfriends, video games are for guys with no access to (or skill with) porn, and arson is for guys with no access to (or skill with) video games. and if all else fails, there's professional wrestling. it all ties together, you see...

Well, excuse me tw that most girls at my school wanna wait till they're legal to engage in advanced sexual activities
I mean, I try, but you don't wanna push the wrong buttons ;)
Don't insult my skills :D

Jay Carr 05-21-2008 10:41 PM

Wait, what? I mean, without starting a real debate here, you are going to an American high school right?

Anyway, I'm sure you're great with the ladies, but more importantly I'm sure tw is just harassing you. You just make such a conspicuous and awesome target you see ;).

PS -- Any more comments on the site at all?

And it seems to grow quite fast

aehurst 05-22-2008 08:10 AM

I get the page twice as wide as the screen, too, using latest Safari w/10.4.11, but lines up properly in Firefox.... not just a Linux thing.

"Rock Around the Clock," -- Bill Haley and the Comets, !955, is considered by some to be the first Rock and Roll hit.

NovaScotian 05-22-2008 08:54 AM

Looks and acts in Camino as it does in Safari.

cwtnospam 05-22-2008 08:55 AM

I haven't logged in, so maybe it works when you have an account, but I can't see all the posts. For example, in:
Home » Forums » BYU MUG Forum » Cheers
if I look at:
unicorns
there are supposed to be 6 replies. I only see the original post:

Can you possibly get a screen capture?

Hmmm...... It looks like it should be working. Can anyone else show up as an anonymous user and try to confirm this? If this is true, it's a pretty serious bug we will need to work out.

Update:Oh, I think I found it, go try it again.

cwtnospam 05-22-2008 02:48 PM

It's working now on the PC (Safari) at work. I'll check on my Mac at home tonight. It isn't working with IE on the PC (not that there's anything wrong with that!) because none of the icons link to anything.

Yes, it's embedding. Whatever comment you reply to, your comment embeds itself under. We might have to work on the exact formatting, but I like it so far.

As far as the page appearing in the wrong place, which I've seen a few times now... I'm having a hard time figuring out what the link is between all of you systems. Would you mind posting the OS you are using and the version of Safari you are using?

Picture in the wrong place.....

I'm on OS 10.4.11 and Safari Version 3.1.1 (4525.18).

Again, it displays properly in Firefox on the same machine, just not in Safari.

fazstp 05-22-2008 05:49 PM

Looks ok.

OS 10.4.9 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac, Safari 2.0.4 ( 419.3 )

Felix_MC 05-22-2008 08:57 PM

Looks alright on my dad's PC under Firefox running Windows XP.

cwtnospam 05-22-2008 09:06 PM

Looks good on 10.4.11 with Safari 3.1, Camino 1.5, and Firefox/2.0.0.14

Jay Carr 05-23-2008 02:04 AM

The bug seems somewhat random... Thought it was Tiger, but the last post says otherwise.

Can I get a couple comments on the usability?

Felix_MC 05-26-2008 01:32 PM

I like it so far, it's easy to use and stuff. The only annoying thing is you have to do the CAPTCHA test twice when posting ;)
Oh, and I love the new background :)

Anti 05-26-2008 08:43 PM

a CAPTCHA to post?

Now that's something that I would just absolutely hate. I'd think that a captcha to sign up would be enough to curtail spammers...

Jay Carr 05-27-2008 01:51 AM

@Anti & Felix -- yeah, more than one captcha does seem a bit excessive. I'll see what I can't do about it. We didn't write the forum software...so... We'll just have to take a look and see.

Felix_MC 05-31-2008 07:33 PM

err, so today I tried to log in and I got this error.

Jay Carr 06-01-2008 06:42 PM

We'll have to look at it.
