Messenger 7 Mac WITH Video?
I have been out of the country for a week... and I have just seen Messenger 7 has been released for Mac... it *seems* like it supports video!!!!
Can anyone verify this?.... has anyone got it working?... has anyone chatted with other MSN users? (Win/Mac)? I am a little dubious.... as MS are usually very good at leaving out key features :D anyone? |
:O never..*goes to check*
|
Well according to the Microsoft website, you can only do it through Office Communications Server 2007 on a corporate network. It doesn't say anything about doing it with your friends normally. I've downloaded it and had a look, and I can't find any option to start a video chat with any of my friends.
So it looks like you can only do it with a Corporate account in Mac 7 over Office Communications Server 2007 - unless someone else finds something different? |
Sigh - excitement terminated.

wait so i cant use it to look at other peoples webcams.. or let them look at me through my webcam...
*facepalm* |
seriously...
someone high up at MS is laughing to themselves... I would say 'I don't get why they produce products with bits missing'..... but I do.. what better way to undermine the competition than produce apps with the crucial bits missing!!?? No VB in Excel.... No Video for standard users in MSN.... Entourage missing Outlook features... No DRM support granted to the Flip4Mac team.... ...the only MS for Mac app that is as full featured as their Windows counterpart is Silverlight.... and thats because the NEED to get a grip on online video. Video Chat?... use Skype. Text, Maths or Presentations?.... Use OpenOffice. No wonder people hate Microsoft!... they are lame.. |
penny for my thought
At first i was excited when I read "now with video" but as usually, i didn't read the fine print which stated "only with communications 2007" which mean's in my mine "**** you mac users". I was highly disappointed because both a Mac users and a windows user I find it extremely counter-productive that you can have cake - but not eat it. But as with all M$ releases, there are always some stupid methods behind it.

Try these in the meantime:

This is really annoying, I've been waiting for msn to have video support for macs since I got this beast! Atm I use adium and use the mebeam plug in for video, it works fine but its just inconvenient most of the time. Its difficult especially where I am in England because EVERYONE uses msn. People just swear by it and don't even both to use aim or skype. I'd always rather use ichat, because its simple and not bloated like msn is on pcs.
Sigh... Maybe one day! |
ichat is by far the best im client ive used..... i to wish it had msn support

You know... I don't know why I am complaining about Messenger... me and most of my friends/colleagues on Mac/Win ditched it long ago in favor of Skype... which works flawlessly... :D |
From a practical point of view, I don't really care that MS have done this; simply because I don't video chat with my friends. But it's just the principle that gets up my nose. Why would they give MSN on Windows video chat capability, but pull a stunt like this on the Mac version - I just don't get their reasoning. Not that I've ever found their reasoning for it...
|
Rumor has it that Adium is getting Video Chat (on all networks) in v2.0...
But that's not gonna be out for a while... |

and ThreeDee... I am looking forward to AdiumX 2.0... but hadn't realized they were setting the bar so high....! I might nip over to their site and donate a few quid to help them along.... :) |

Yahoo IM for OSX = best Video chat option right now..
Quote:
The good news is that yahoo messenger for osx supports both Webcams AND Voice now. It works really well -- about 95% of the time, I can video chat with a Windows user with no problems. http://messenger.yahoo.com/ My only gripe is that Yahoo IM for OSX doesn't support all Windows Yahoo IM features like Photosharing/multi-user conferencing, but heck, there's no way to video chat with Windows users without it. Also, Yahoo IM network now works with MSN, but the Video will not work between a Yahoo user and an MSN user. On the flip side, has anyone gotten the iSight to work through Parallels or VMWare? |

As far as I know, XP and Vista will detect an external iSight as “1394 Desktop Video Camera”, but no driver exists for Windows. I think most IM clients can use the video, but are not capable of receiving audio from the iSight’s internal microphones without a proper driver. Is this the case, or does anyone else have conflicting experience of the external iSights on Windows? P.S - Sorry if this is a bit off topic for the thread. |

As far as external iSight - you are currently out of luck. I've been looking for a Windows driver for years -- no one has made one. You will only get video. Parallels doesn't even support firewire devices, so you can't even external isights to work in parallels. I'm not sure if any of this is different with VMWare... |

I didnt need to extract the driver My internal isight works just fine.. you just need the parallels software drivers in windows |
Parallels isight driver?

Has anyone tried it via DARWINE or CrossOver?
|
Even if they did work in DarWINE or Crossover, both would have difficulty interfacing with video.
