We've been insulted!

Driving along I-95 in New Hampshire today, I passed a Volkswagen Beetle with a logo on the side: "Geek Squad". My wife asked what that was, and I explained that it was guys and gals who fixed Windows PCs. Apple, I said, called their helpers members of the Genius Bar.

Her reply: "What does that make the guys you chat with then -- the Nerd Herd"? Ahh the Luddite wife.

fracai 04-14-2008 09:18 PM

Yeah... What are we?

Hinters?

Xhinters? (zhinters)

Losers? ... no, no not that one ...

raveen69 04-14-2008 09:34 PM

geek less.

in my exerience with the 'geek-squad' they are anything from geeks. They don't know what they should, and they don't do any hard core-work at the retail stores, they are shipped out of state to a warehouse in I THINK Texas. Probably Texas, India ;-)

Just because they look the part, doesn't mean the fit the bill.

Felix_MC 04-14-2008 09:35 PM

Whats wrong with being a Nerd? :D

Gnarlodious 04-14-2008 09:57 PM

Geek Squad just installs home entertainment systems & such. They aren't really geeks, just electricians.

Installing home entertainment system is far from being an electrician, which is a skilled trade.

Gnarlodious 04-14-2008 11:04 PM

Maybe so, but it was pretty funny anyway :D

NovaScotian, I see you've had a long and happy marriage. She understands so much. :)

I heard GeekSquad used to be a pretty good company before Best Buy purchased them. Now they just do things like setting up home theaters, 'removing' spyware/viruses (which means installing Norton. :P ), and selling 'extended warranties'.

johngpt 04-15-2008 06:03 PM

I went to the Genius Bar to order a pint of genius. But they were out.

NovaScotian 04-15-2008 08:16 PM

My wife is into pithy sayings -- in addition to the nerd herd, she commented about a person we saw: "All the world's a stage; and some people should stay off it". I am often bombarded with these...

That's what our local podiatrist said, "Hell hath no fury like a woman's corn."

Lately, I've been more of an American Idle.

fazstp 04-16-2008 05:02 PM

Or if you like reality television;

"All the world is staged, and all the men and women wannabe actors."

schneb 04-16-2008 05:04 PM

LOL to both above.

johngpt 04-16-2008 07:23 PM

The more posts which accrue to this thread, the more it seems that NovaScotian's wife may be right about us.

Jay Carr 04-17-2008 02:52 AM

I'm just going to go ahead and agree with johngpt... :p

NovaScotian 04-17-2008 09:55 AM

I looked in the mirror and saw the truth myself. :D

This one is new to me. Googling suggests that it's trickery to get someone to click on a link to the Rick Astley video?

Example:

Hey man, you have to check out this link, it is the funniest thing ever. Seriously, you will love it!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU

When they click on it, they get rick roll'd.

New to me as well. From Wiki...

Rickrolling is a prank and Internet meme involving the music video for the 1987 Rick Astley song "Never Gonna Give You Up" written and produced by Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman known as Stock Aitken Waterman. The meme is a classic bait and switch: a person provides a link they claim is relevant to the topic at hand, but the link actually takes the user to the Astley video. The URL can be masked or obfuscated in some manner so that the user cannot determine the true source of the link without clicking (and thus satisfying their curiosity). By extension, it can also mean playing the song loudly in public in order to be disruptive. A person who falls for the prank is said to be "rickrolled".

tlarkin 04-17-2008 01:32 PM

I just rick rolled you guys! ha!

schneb 04-17-2008 01:36 PM

How long before the term "Rick Rolled" appears on Big Bang Theory?

Felix_MC 04-17-2008 03:52 PM

Actually it's been appearing in quite a few popular shows recently, even Family Guy.. Check out the whole article

Yea, I actually made a page with a PHP redirection script in it and set it in the root directory of my site. Then I made that page my 404 error page by modifying the .htaccess file.. Then I made up a believable URL, and posted it here, and since the URL didn't actually exist it went to the 404 error page which sent you to the video :p..
It's nice to know a few things like that.. come in handy when pulling a prank :D

tlarkin 04-17-2008 04:42 PM

Man, sorry to hijack this thread,

But, I just read a geek blog the other day about a sys admin that did just that. He changed his companies web filter block page to a redirect of rick roll. Then every time he would walk around his company and hear the rick roll song he knew someone was trying to look at porn.

haha

Sorry, nova, I think your wife is right, we are nerds and we congregate in herds.

"You are coming to a sad realization... cancel or allow?"

ThreeDee 04-17-2008 05:24 PM

The YouTube admins redirected all the "Featured Videos" on the homepage to a single rickroll video for April Fools. It gained over 10 million views in less than a day.

Any youtube link ending in uuiU or RSH0 or -oVI is a rickroll. Those are the 3 most popular ones.

The links are plastered all over sites like Digg and Fark and Reddit.

ThreeDee 04-22-2008 04:46 PM

Speaking of Geek Squad:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzxR8OH-fDQ

Not a rickroll, but still amusing.

kel101 04-22-2008 04:58 PM
