Software update downloading the same update over and over
Tried the search and didn't find anything appropriate in the first 8 pages and just don't have time to to spend working my way though a fix for this annoyance.
Apple Update on my MBP keeps downloading "MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1." The first couple of times I didn't realize it was the same one over and over so I let it install. The third, 4th, etc time I knew we had already done it so I just hit cancel. I know there is a receipts file(s) that keep track of these things, just don't have time right now to go digging for it/them, then figure out what to hand enter. Anyone got any ideas? |
Have you restarted so the update can take effect?
|
Have you tried going to Apple's Support site and manually installing the update?
|
I have restarted this machine often. Didn't manually install. I'll try that. Odd that the file size isn't the same.
|
Hmm. When I downloaded the file from the Support site and tried to run it it told me that my computer does not need the update. Yet Apple Update insists that I download it again.
|
Interesting the file is in /Library/Updaters. When I run the package it installs and SAYS it is installing a receipt, yet no, it never does create the receipt. The dist script also has rogue line feeds in it, I noticed, but I don't know if that's an issue. I don't have time to mess with it right now. On top of that the index.plist in that directory doesn't match what's in there. Annoying. :(

You may want to Repair Permissions from Disk Utility. That is the only reason i can think of that a Receipt wouldn't be written after both an automated and manual update.
PS: The update sizes will vary depending if it's PPC, Intel or Universal. There are also combo-updates that combine current and past updates. |
The problem with the plist gave me an idea. I deleted the plist and the update package, ran Apple Updater again, let it update, rebooted and then checked. No updater stuck in the updater directory and a new receipt.
Great. Right? Ya Right. Right up until I ran Apple Update again and it wanted to download the exact same update AGAIN. A quick check with Google reveals a lot of people with the same problem on the same update. |
Fixed. Apple's Updater doesn't understand that some of have case sensitive file systems. For crying out loud. A wasted hour and a few symlinks later fixed it.
