First McDonald's commercial - very creepy

That clown looks ominous:)

PS - I've just noticed the game with two abbreviations... Why did Steve Jobs name his system Mac? Maybe because of love to burgers? :)

specter 01-23-2008 04:57 AM

I like your pun:)

But I doubt that there are any connection between Macs and McDonalds:D

BTW, it really sets me pondering where the names Mac and Apple came from. Any explanations will be gratefully accepted!

There has been a drastic change in advertising mechanisms since those days. Now we have ads that look absolutely different.
I wouldn't call this anti-advertising. The mentality of consumers has changed greatly nowadays and old ads just won't work

appleman_design 01-23-2008 07:37 AM

is that a dixie cup on his nose...LOL

:D It is, definitely

nikopolidis 01-23-2008 08:14 AM

This commercial really makes me laugh! :D Funny clown (so different from todays clown) and that funny song in the end of it!
Can we see such primitive advertising nowadays? Great shift can be observed when we see things in such contrast..

Jredrum 01-23-2008 10:03 AM

Glad that you guys like the video.

That is my site it is posted on, and the first time I saw it after it was uploaded I literally LOL'ed.

It amazes me that someone actually videotaped the commercial back then. It looks as if it is from the 50's, but possibly the 60's?

That clown is Willard Scott, Today Show weatherman from 1980-1996.

That commercial is kinda creepy...
They should put it in a horror movie... The "good guy" is watching TV, and the commercial comes up... then suddenly Ronald McDonald comes out of the TV with a knife and attacks the "good guy".. or never-mind that..

Well, I couldn't find anything on google, but here's a website that Ask.com brought up. I talks briefly why about Jobs named the company Apple.
http://play.tm/wire/click/867234

And through Ask.com, I think I found the answer to your other question.
Here's a quote from this website:

Quote:

Jef Raskin, 61, Developer of Apple Macintosh, Is Dead. Jef Raskin was a computer technology pioneer who named the Macintosh computer after his favorite apple but altered the spelling for copyright reasons.

It isn't just creepy because of the clown. It's creepy because of the innovative way an ordinary meal (burger/fries/shake) was marketed to children using friendly characters, turning a restaurant into a theme park that kids wanted to go to.

specter 01-24-2008 03:55 AM

Felix_MC,
Thanks! That was really interesting to find out the origin of the name. Now I completely understand why "Apple" and "Macintosh" are called what they are called:)

I assume that children were the main target group of McDonald's restaurants then.
Today in Russia they have different ads of McDonald's that focus on the quality of the food. Fresh and absolutely unique meal.

Kids are afraid of clowns because of such ads...
When I was a kid I saw the movie ''It'' based on Stephen King's novel. That clown is REALLY creepy.

Apple(s)

I cannot fathom why Apple would settle on this fruit for a name. Is there not a story about Eve biting the apple and gaining knowledge?
McIntosh, is a cultivar of Apples. There are more than 7,500 types of apples
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_apple_cultivars
I would suspect that at one time Apple was intent on making a variety of products named after Apples. Makes sense, I can see a blackberry sized Apple called a Pippin, or an Ipod called a Golden Delicious....ok maybe that is a stretch but something to ponder at any rate.;)

Or Newton laptop - the name which is also somehow related to apples:D

When i was a kid I've been in Spain, La Pineda (summer resort) with my parents. We used to go to the small Roller Coaster park where was small train carousel with tunnel. There was a clown who scared kids with his sudden appearance on this train from somewhere. :) Sometimes it was funny but sometimes it was really frightful...
I've watched the "IT" movie too! Creepy...

I remember hearing about the company when it was very much in its infancy in the late 70s. The news article said it was because the perception of computers were that they were intimidating and arcane and you had to be some kind of geeky science-fiction genius to deal with them. Here was a company that was going to make computers that would be organic and natural to people, simple & everday things that could be a part of an ordinary person's life, as accessible and "normal" as eating an apple.

Of course that could've come along as a post hoc explanation and not really be what was going in the minds of Jobs et. al., but that's how it was covered in the press.

That's certainly part of the reason, but there were others as well. Perhaps more important to Steve was that Apple started with an A. Thus when someone looked up "computer" in the phone book, "Apple" was the first company listed. They also liked how it was connected to Newton's Apple, in fact the very very first Apple logo was Newton sitting under an Apple tree.

So, in short, there are a lot of reasons they choose Apple (though the advertising company they hired tried to make them change it repeatedly, they only succeeded in getting ride of the original logo..)

The history of this beverage is rather interesting, indeed.
