Patriots vs. Giants in the Super Bowl

Who do you like in this one?

macpro2006 01-21-2008 11:56 AM

Go Patriots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phil St. Romain 01-21-2008 12:40 PM

They played each other in New York on 12-29-07 and the Patriots won 38-35 after trailing for most of the game.

The Giants are red-hot now, but it seems the Patriots always find a way to win. What an amazing season they've had!

ArcticStones 01-21-2008 12:43 PM

Is Janet Jackson entertaining at half-time?

Photek 01-21-2008 01:34 PM

did someone mention a giant parrot?

my moneys on the parrot

Sherman Homan 01-21-2008 01:51 PM

Either way, its going to be a great game. Two teams with everything going for them.

That was a great game until New York stopped playing about halfway through the third quarter. Of course, they weren't playing for anything, either. I'd like to see New York play both halves of the Super Bowl like they played the first half of that game.

styrafome 01-21-2008 04:05 PM

I don't have an allegiance either way, but my main motivation in picking a winner is that it would be a damn shame for the Patriots to do all they have done this year and not win just this one last game. I want to see them get it all done.

Jay Carr 01-21-2008 05:17 PM

I'm with styrafome. I really would like the Patriots to win, and I think they will.

Embarrassingly enough, I was watching the telly at the time of the wardrobe malfunction, and never noticed a thing!

Maybe we could get a malfunction if Jessica Biel was performing? I'm sure I'd pay more attention this time.

ThreeDee 01-21-2008 07:37 PM

Woohoo! Go Giants! [/pointlesscomment]

iampete 01-21-2008 08:20 PM

I've seen Eli Manning execute very poorly and/or do really dumb things too often in the past to feel comfortable in picking the Giants.

However, if he and the rest of the team play as well as they have in the past several games, they have a reasonable chance of being able to beat the Patriots in what would be an exciting game.

schneb 01-22-2008 01:28 PM

The Patriots are such a perfect team, the Super Bowl is going to be Super Boring. For me, football is over. The Packs/Giants game was a REAL game and a great way for me to end the season. The rest is just a good reason to sit with family and eat Chili.

The only thing that will really make my day is if the Giants have a "Facing the Giants" or "Hoosiers" moment. So in that I will say, "go Giants".

Sherman Homan 01-22-2008 01:52 PM

The December Patriots/Giants game was great! Close score, good plays, if that is any indication about how evenly matched these two teams are it could be a real Super Bowl.

schneb 01-22-2008 06:11 PM

I agree, that WAS a good game. But against this Patriots team, you have to be perfect with no mistakes. Nor can you pull up lame from injury trying to keep up with Moss. Perhaps I am purposely keeping my expectations low. :(

johngpt 01-22-2008 10:32 PM

In general, Superbowls are such a disappointment compared to the playoffs which lead up to them. Our expectations, as most years, are to have a great time with friends, eating wonderful food, and hope that the game isn't too boring.

I usually root for the underdog, but it'd be nice to watch history being made, with NE going all the way.

How's that for wishy-washy?

Mailman42 01-23-2008 10:07 AM

This is one time I will actually be rooting for a New York team.

Spent time in the New England area, and no matter what sport/season/National Game/etc. We were shown the New England teams. This was when only the Celtics were decent.

Go NY

schneb 01-23-2008 04:10 PM

I really think if you were to open up Tom Brady's face, you would find a Terminator-styled cyborg. The guy has an incredible targeting system that must have some internal HUD.

Anyone else think he looks like B.D. from early Doonesbury?

yellow 01-23-2008 04:14 PM

hmmmm.... i wonder whom i want? :D

navaho 01-23-2008 08:58 PM

I'm with you, Yellow. I'm from Foxboro. :D

tw 01-23-2008 11:15 PM

errr... can you add an "I Just Don't Care" button to the poll? :o

Phil St. Romain 02-03-2008 10:47 PM

Wow, the Giants played a really good game! Eli Manning broke out from under his older brother's shadow this year.

Condolences to New England fans. They had an amazing run and will be back, I'm sure.

johngpt 02-03-2008 11:22 PM

It became rather exciting toward the end, didn't it?

The play of the game had to be Manning's escape from the sack, tossing the ball, with that amazing catch of Tyree, holding the ball with one hand against his helmet as he's dragged backward over the body of the defender.

That was tremendous effort. I'm not a great fan of U.S. football, but I appreciate skill and heart in any endeaver.

I do feel that the commercials which aired, were on whole, rather disappointing. I generally look forward to seeing what the advertisers have created for the game.

I had to laugh at one, toward the end of the game, from Victoria's Secret. The entire room fell silent! Both the men and the women in the room were rendered speechless!

Hal Itosis 02-04-2008 12:10 AM

The Pats pissed it away. When they got that TD with about 3 minutes left,
they practically started celebrating (the offense for sure... looks like the
defense just fell asleep or something).

Not to take anything away from Manning & Co. They gave it their all, and
rightly reaped the rewards.

I'll bet the ladies were thinking: If I looked like her, I wouldn't need "Victoria's Secret". Even a burlap bag would do the trick.

Could not have been more wrong. That was one of the most exciting Super Bowls I have seen since Rams vs. Titans! Looks like I had my day made and got my "Facing the Giants" moment!

tlarkin 02-04-2008 01:17 PM

I am glad the Pats lost. I don't like Brady or Moss (but for different reasons) and the fact that they were caught up in that cheating scandal I think serves them right for not winning.

I was kind of hoping the Packers would win it, that way Favre could have retired right after winning a Super Bowl. After they lost in the play offs I really didn't care who won.

However, I would like to point out that 2 ex chiefs players did well last night, but they never do that well when they play for us!!!!!

schneb 02-04-2008 01:31 PM

I agree. I would have loved to have seen the Packs win it. But who could complain with such a GREAT Championship playoff between the Packs/Giants in overtime? But I also like the fact that Eli is no longer in Peyton's shadow and that they can compare rings during family reunions. :)

But I also appreciate the win for another reason--it was SO cinematic. The Giants started out in the tank. Eli was throwing more interceptions than completions. Then, a soldier from Iraq came in with no legs (from a mine exploding under his Humvee) and gave them a pep talk about nothing being impossible. After his pep talk, the Giants really started to move. Then they squeaked by in becoming a wildcard team. Then they became one of only two wildcard teams to ever get in to the Super Bowl. And THEN, for a wildcard team to actually BEAT a team with a record breaking perfect score of 18-0? And it all started with a pep talk from a US soldier from Iraq! Man, that has GOT to be made in to a movie!!

navaho 02-04-2008 07:56 PM

Well, I'm a life long Pats fan but this time I have to say not that the Pats lost but that the Giants won. They were the better team this day.

For the first time since Belichick has been the leader of this team I flt we were out coached and out prepared. Still, it's the first time I can say that, and I guess you can't win them all. that's why we play them.

Grats to the Giants, they deserve it. Pats fans can look forward with anticipation to trying to go 19-0 next year and sealing the deal.

Am I the only one that is soooo sick and tired of Mercury Morris and Don Shula?

sk8nerd 02-04-2008 08:22 PM

hehe, the patriots season sure went down in flames.

Jay Carr 02-04-2008 11:11 PM

I don't know if down in flames is the right analogy, as it infers some amount of excitement. The thing that struck me about the whole game is how you felt that something was wrong the entire time, but couldn't put your finger on it. Then suddenly, there was a miracle catch, a touchdown, and three minutes later the Pats died quietly. Seems more like a slow death to me...

I really thought the Pats would pull it out until that first bomb they threw in their last drive. What ever happened to getting in field goal range and just tying it up? Why on earth did they go for a 90 yard touch down? Did Belichick's mind melt just before that last drive? And what about the other opportunity they had for a field goal? And what happened to the O-line! And...and...ah, I'm running out a steam.

Look, I'm not normally a Pats fan, in fact, I normally hate them. But the idea of a team going 19-0 was just too cool for me not to root for them. I feel really let down... I'm a Raiders fan really, I was hoping to use the Pats perfection to forget about what's going down in Raider town. ...so much for that, eh? If there's a sports god, I'd like to know what I did to make him so mad.

yellow 02-05-2008 10:21 AM

Personally, I think the MVP needed to go to the Giants Defense. Without them, I don't think the Giants could have won. They only managed to put up 17 points. If the G-men's D hadn't held the Pats league leading O down so well, 17 points and miracle catches wouldn't have been enough.

I agree. For me, this was exactly the same strategy the Pats put on Kurt Warner when up against the Rams in the Super Bowl. Their defense got in there and rattled Warner's cage so that he could not have time to work his magic. Same with Brady. The Giants defense was breaking through that tough pocket of protection that gave the him so much time to do those perfect throws. Now he was under pressure and not quite used to it like Eli had become.

No sour grapes here. The Patriots gave it their best. They broke some records this year, but the Giants broke a few themselves. It was a very exciting game, and THAT is what it is all about.

johngpt 02-06-2008 02:25 PM

If you enjoy watching good defense, then this was a good superbowl. There wasn't the razzle dazzle of a blistering offense, but amazingly good fundamental defense.

I agree with Yellow, in that the real MVP(s) should be the Giants defense. I guess their MVP trophy goes by the name Lombardi.

sk8nerd 02-08-2008 03:53 PM

I think "down in flames" is the perfect analagy, referring to thier season, of course.

meh.

18-1 is still a pretty solid season, ya? :)

johngpt 02-11-2008 10:34 AM

Why is it that the losing team in the Superbowl are dogs, rather than being thought of as the second best team in US football?

schneb 02-11-2008 03:25 PM

18-1 was record breaking. Which made the Giants comeback so Hollywoodesque. I think it still made for an amazing game.

hehe, I'm sure you've heard the phrase - "Second place is the first loser"
