My Mac has a virus!
According to this scumbag web site, my Mac can now run Windows viruses. It then goes on to try to use ActiveX controls to install a "fix" which is surely malware itself.

you need to stop surfing shady sites Carlos :D
but seriously... if my dad got that message on his PC.... he would want to be 'secure' and would accept what ever it told him to do...! good job he is getting a Mac for Christmas :D |

It wasn't even a shady site or search, which is what shocked me most. I Googled "maytag skybox troubleshooting" and that was in the top 5. BTW, if anyone knows where to find a logic board for a Maytag Skybox... |
Just wait for the OS X codec/update/adobe installer trojans/spyware/malware which socially engineers the user into allowing it to install, I am not looking forward to those days.
I assume you are using a VM on your mac of windows? Otherwise, how would any OS X browser even use active X controls. |
that was part of his point. :)
It then goes on to try to use ActiveX controls to install a "fix" Whomever wrote that site sure wasn't going to put time into making it not work for a mac. |

So, yes, there is a very real threat to the mac OS. |
:o "There was already a proof of concept malware codec for quicktime that was hit the interwebs. Google search it, you should find plenty of articles. It tricks users into installing a third party codec to view free porn, and its actually malware.
So, yes, there is a very real threat to the mac OS." Yeah the 'codec' request got me on one of those unscrupulous sites. So yeah, it's out there lurking and looking for even less nefarious access. Not only did I allow the codec installation, I was in Admin mode as a user, and had a couple of firewall options open for my (not so local) network. Before anyone calls me 'stupid' here, I have beaten you to it, so spare me the additional indignity. It was a lesson hard and well learned and I approach the web with a renewed vigilance and respect after having to cancel or reconfigure numerous accounts and passwords. Not to mention a complete reinstall and reconfiguration of my MBP. To all you nay-sayers, trust me, we all 'forget where we are sometimes in cyber-land and there are consequences, regardless of your operating system... Flame On!:o |
If you really want a flaming you need to ask for anti-virus recommendations. Funny thing is I often see a banner ad on this site for Mac AV software.

The fact is that there will always be a real threat to any system on the internet. You can't assume that you're 100% safe just because you're lots safer using a Mac than Windows. Safety is relative, in computers as in real life. Nothing is every completely safe. |

Yeah, they have one common failure in these things, a door flap sensor that gets condensation across the pins and then fries out. It's a useless safety device (only prevents a soda can falling on your hand from a foot up, not a real safety issue) that prevents the whole machine from working. It's only $15, but I have to wait a week and then take the door completely apart.

I wonder if real viruses for Macs will ever appear |

They can damage Windows partition if you have one, so I prefer to use protecting software when I use windows... Even if I browse in safari and then exchange files between Mac and Windows partitions viruses will invade my Windows:D |
I solve that by never storing anything important in Windows. If my Windows image or Windows computer gets infected, I just don't care. :p

I also try not to store any important data in Windows, but I often browse in FireFox through the Windows partition and there's a chance that my recent downloads may be destroyed |
My feeling is that when a Mac user that does that, it looks to those who measure browser/OS use that there are fewer Mac users and more PC users than there really are. That isn't going to hurt Apple, but it will delay the day when we reach a tipping point where developers and IT decision makers see Windows as being legacy software. I don't want to do anything that might do that, partly because I'd like to reduce the amount of junk mail that PC bots send and that we all pay for, and partly because I hate Microsoft even more than I like my Mac.
|
Well, maybe you are right...
But I ought to use Windows on my Mac, it is inevitable for me. And I just like FireFox - I'm just used to it very much. Maybe it is not better than Safari, but I like it more |
Use the Mac version.
|
I never used it, just because there has always been Safari. I've got antivirus and don't fear browsing internet through Windows.
Well, from time to time I use both for these purposes |
