Best game of 2007?

So we come to the end of another packed year of games. Some lived up to expectations, others surpassed it, and some games came from no where to become all time greats. Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Mario galaxy, assassins creed and bioshock just to name a few. So what has been the best game that has come out this year?

Personally i dont think halo deserves the crown. It is a good game, but then one would come to expect that after the original halo. I think that the best game that came out for everything has to be Call of Duty 4. But the game that overall i think should be given the crown is crysis. Not just for having the best graphics we've ever seen in a game but for the attention to detail, the physics and the size of the maps. I think it is perfect, but then again thats just my opinion...

Jay Carr 12-15-2007 05:29 PM

The real question I have to ask is, are we talking games I have actually played all the way through? Or just the games all the magazines tell me are good :).

kel101 12-16-2007 06:24 AM

Both lol which one have you played (maybe not all the way through) and think rocks. and which one have you seen in magazines?

specter 12-23-2007 02:38 PM

I liked Jericho very much. A nice 3d shooter... A good game - very beautiful with good screenplay

I know the one I would like to play the most is Bioshock, it's had my attention all year. I really liked System Shock 2, and it's the same team that did that one so...

As for what I've actually played...I don't even know what games I've played that came out in 2007... I'm rather broke you see, so I only buy used games. My favorite game that I've played all year is Oblivion, but it's about two years old now.

specter 12-24-2007 05:01 AM

Well, Oblivion is really one of the greatest games ever. I also discovered it in 2007 already, but I think it will be a long time until someone makes a game brighter than The Elder Scrolls IV
I was almost shocked with the graphics when I left the catacombs under the Imperial City and came out into the light.... That was awesome!:) And I thought nothing will ever amaze me in computer games after I first saw Wolfenstein 3d and Doom:D

nikopolidis 12-24-2007 09:34 AM

Unfortunately, I can't name the best game of 2007, because this year I didn't play at all...
But I want offer you my rating (TOP 5) of the greatest games ever:

1. Grand Theft Auto (GTA)
2. Manhunt
3. FIFA 98-08
4. Desperados
5. MaxPayne

Can't wait for the release of GTA sequel.. Last one was San Andreas. Does anybody know when we can all buy the PC-version???

kel101 12-24-2007 10:21 AM

not until at least 6 months after the console version... and since M$ have the exclusive content, it will probably be vista only, and from the looks of the new trailer, it will need a mean graphics card

specter 12-26-2007 04:46 AM

GTA-1 was the best game of the series. The sequels didn't excite me that much.

My favourite FIFA is 2000 and 1999

Do you mean that one in London? :) But it was rather primitive especially in graphics... I think the further the better...

One vote for Worms 3D!

It was released a few years ago, but there is a UB patch due any day now. Feral have 4 more days to release it before 2007 is over.

I had a brief play of the 3d version, and personally i preferred worms Armageddon, theres just something about a concrete donkey falling from the sky crushing worms that warms my heart :D

Yeah, Worms Armageddon is truly a classic game!
But sheep bombs and banana bombs were much better!=)

ThreeBKK 12-27-2007 06:46 AM

You two have got to try playing "Sniper Mode" in Worms 3D. Tons of fun! It just wouldn't be as fun in two dimensions.

The concrete donkey exists in W3D, as do sheep, and bananas.

Unfortunately I completely missed Worms 3d. When it appeared I didn't have the opportunity to run it on my weaker-than-ever computer. And now there's a great deal of games that are newer and better. But I think, I'll give it a try, especially since the bananas are present, as you say:)

nikopolidis 12-27-2007 07:46 AM

My young sister is enjoying to play Worms Armageddon on her mobile phone. :)
I used to play it about 5 years ago. We even used to arrange some kind of tournaments! It was pretty cool! Sweetest childhood... :D

kel101 12-27-2007 11:53 AM

isnt there a newer version of worms out, i think its called mayhem, should i get that or get 3d?

Newer: Certainly.
Better: Well, that's a matter of perspective.

kel101 12-28-2007 05:31 AM

Speaking of newer games being better, have you seen the graphics for the new GT prologue? I cant tell the difference between that and real life http://www.gametrailers.com/player/29243.html

Actually, I meant that when you've got a new machine and some time to play games you try to get the newest games to see you computer work in all its glory.
Sometimes old games are better (just like music, for example). Take the UFO: Enemy Unknown. A great game!

It is really very beautiful... Realistic and great.
But what we see in trailers is often much better than the game itself.

kel101 12-29-2007 05:28 AM

I know, but ive seen the some gameplay aswell, and looks pretty much the same. But the thing with GT is that it was always too hard, and really boring to get the licenses. But at least there is going to be multiplayer

As for me, I have never liked racing games a lot. The only one I got addicted to was one of the Need For Speed Series (Porsche Unleashed). For me that game was a real breakthrough in racing genre. Afterwards I didn't see a game about cars that would excite me that much.
I like 'silent' games. It is good when I can drink tea while playing etc. I like turn-based games (Heroes of Might And Magic, Jagged Alliance). And I like Football Manager very much!

You do realize not liking racing games makes you a heathen, right? ;). I'm really big into racing games personally, though I recognize they are not everyone's cup of tea.

Porsche Unleashed was pretty good, but, to me, most of the recent Need for Speed games have been abominations. They progressively become less focused on actual racing, and more focused on superficial body "mods". But then again, I'm a realism junkie who adores games like Gran Turismo and F1 200*. So what would you expect?

But, if you're looking for a blast in newer arcade racer, go pick up Burnout 3 (the best in the series in my opinion.) The racing is really tight, there are a million (easily understood) modes, and cars blow up into pretty orange and yellow balls when they crash. Building on that last idea is a "Crash mode" where you gain points and rewards for creating as much damage in possible in one massive, high speed crash.

kel101 12-31-2007 06:57 AM

Burnout looks amazing, although it doesnt look as good as GT, because GT is on a set track and Burnout is a open sandbox. As far as need for speed games go, the best ones were the ones without a crappy story, so hot pursuit 2 in my opinion was the best NFS

And what about Need For Speed Pro Street? I guess it is a sequel of Most Wanted. Haven't played it yet. Any reports?

I haven't played it either:)

To Zalister:
Heathen?:) A good word, in fact. Didn't know that it can transfer such a meaning:)
Did you ever try playing with that wheel-contraption for video games? (Don't know, actually, how you call it in English)
http://hard.rozetka.com.ua/data/prod...l/img01458.jpg
I had a very good experience of playing racing games with this thing. If I had one, I'd definitely race more:)But I'm too cheap to get one...

specter 01-10-2008 08:42 AM

Has anyone here tried playing Hellgate:London?
http://hellgate-london.ru/img/content/index.jpg
The game is a 3d-reincarnation of good old Diablo II(hope you remember this sprite monster:))

http://www.travel.ag.ru/special/diablo2/screens/16.jpg
The game resembles Diablo a lot. But it has got some problems with production. It runs very slow even of fastest systems and has lots of bugs! But overall the idea and realization are very good. Has anyone played it yet?

ThreeBKK 01-11-2008 06:47 AM

I have to change my vote to Wingnuts 2 as the best game of 2007. There are a few reasons why:

A) It was a free gift from Freeverse for a few days during the holiday season 2007.
B) The full version has a scenario editor where you can create your own stages.
C) It was made for the Mac, not just ported over from the PC, and is an excellent showcase of what games on the Mac can do.
D) Very funny dialogue with cameo appearances from some pseudo-celebrities.
E) Feral missed releasing its universal binary patch for Worms 3D in 2007.

kel101 01-11-2008 04:15 PM

need for speed pro street is ... well crap, the graphics are ok-ish when compared to all other racing games. The story is awful (as are all stories in racing games) and the game is very boring...

Racing games should not have any sort of plot, in my not-so-humble opinion. If the game cannot entertain you with the racing action, it fails, period.

kel101 01-12-2008 10:06 AM

ok so 2007 is long gone, which game are you all looking forward to coming out this year??

Jay Carr 01-12-2008 12:13 PM

Gran Tourismo 5 (I think I've clearly established that by this point, eh?) Plus the new Kart game for Wii, and the new Smash Brothers.

Which reminds me, one of the best games of last year was Mario Galaxies. If you've never played it, you should.

kel101 01-12-2008 02:45 PM

I have played it, and i think its good, but i think zelda is still a little bit better. As for 2008, GTA is the one im looking for, and killzone.

nikopolidis 01-14-2008 08:54 AM

First of all in 2008 I'm waiting for 2 Rockstar's games: Gta IV and Manhunt 2. I love all Rockstar's games! Nice guys do nice games! :)
I'm also waiting for some new economic strategies which will be similar to Transport Giant/Industry Giant/traffic Giand. Does anybody know about releases of these games?

kel101 01-14-2008 05:49 PM

gta omg tis gonna be amazing, i have a family friend thats an producer there, told me loads of stuff about the game (no i cant tell you i dont want rockstar suing me) I might have even played a little *wink wink*... and i cant wait for the new duel shock controller, its an amazing piece of technology, i saw a demo of it with metal gear solid. When theres an explosion the controller vibrates, but the intensity is based on how far away the explosion is, and the vibration is even directional :O

nikopolidis i thought manhunt was released a few months ago, it may be banned where you live, so your best bet would be to look on ebay for a copy

No, Manhunt 2 wasn't released in Russia. I think it couldn't be banned in my country. :) I've heard it was banned in UK. I think we are talking about different platforms. Are you talking about Playstation? I thought so when you told about vibrating controllers... :) I want to know about PC-releases.

Hi!

Actually, I'm waiting for 3 games:
Jagged Alliance 3 - I hope this will be a success. I like this type of games a lot
Starcraft 2 - once I played starcraft a lot and I'm curious to see what they will make of it. But actually, I'm almost sure, that it won't be great.
Fallout 3 - I wish it could transfer at least 50% of the Fallout 2 atmosphere. In this case it will be a success

Jay Carr 01-16-2008 08:29 AM

They made the teaser available online but I didn't watch it. Do you know where it is located?

Jay Carr 01-16-2008 09:14 AM

Don't remember, honestly. I don't think it will be a huge flop, there are a bunch of games out there that took longer than any expected to get out, and where good when they were released. So have some faith...:).

specter 01-17-2008 04:50 AM

Actually I'd like to have some faith but I don't have it. They've been developing the game for about 7 years already. I'm sure they have to remake graphical design twice a year (if it was ever created) to catch up with the times. Still I'd like the game to be a nice sequel to Duke Nukem 3d. This was the first game I played on PC ever (1996)!

Ah, nostalgia!!!

Jay Carr 01-17-2008 02:10 PM

Don't you think that 10 years is a great date for the process of the game development?
I barely can imagine how this is done, but I think they had lots of troubles keeping the game up-to-date. I hope graphics will not be a letdown. 10 years is enough to make at least 5 good games, and FPS is not the type of game that requires 10 years of work

Completely agreed.

It's funny you mention the graphics engine, because the changing of said engine (twice) is what has made it take so long to be done. Originally they were just going to use the Quake 2 Engine, then they moved to Unreal, and now they are working with...memory fails me. But each of those iterations tooks a good 3 years, it would seem.

What's funny to me is that if they had just finished the stupid things, we could have had three Duke Nukem games by now...

kel101 01-19-2008 09:27 AM

Guys, I need some opinions.
I am fond of Football Simulator games and used to play Fifa from 98 till 08.
I've never played other Football Simulators. Some days ago I saw information about Pro Evolution soccer. It looks good. Did anybody play both?
Did you like Pro Evo? What is better?
Cheers. :)

specter 02-29-2008 06:36 AM

One of my friends who loves Football simulator games intends that Pro Evolution soccer is the best sports simulator ever...
I dislike this type of games - I prefer Football Managers. Well, preferred. They take so much time, I can't play them now

kel101 02-29-2008 11:52 AM

football manager 08 for mac is awesome, personally im a fifa man though when it comes to those sorts of games (it has a manager mode to)

Jay Carr 02-29-2008 12:09 PM

Is there some reason that American game makers don't change titles like "Pro Evolution Soccery" to "Pro Evolution Football". I mean, it only makes sense (I'm in America, and I think it makes sense, so it must make sense to everyone, right ). I wonder if printing costs are prohibitive or something...

well officially its not football, it is actually soccer. But it should be renamed world wide to football. I mean in american football you rarly use your feet.... its stupid. Then again its typical, taking a great english name and using it for something else

So, by now I have this one opinion of person who has played it. Not too much to make a purchase decision... :)

Me to hate this phenomena. :) Football is the game played by foot while in American football they use their hands more often then foots. Name it American Hand-foot-Ball then! :D
And as far as I know soccer is essentially a British term. It was entered by the rules of national association of British football players...

Yep, this game is one of the best ones ever. I like that there's a Mac version. Fifa managers are a bit more populistic and lack variety

kel101 03-03-2008 11:15 AM

i like even more that its pc and mac on 1 disk

As far as I know, the game was first written for Macs and PC version appeared later

Sticking to the thread's title, let me introduce you Absolute TOP 2007 (Best games of 2007 as a result of poll on one of the popular Russian video-games Internet-portal).

There are several nominations. I would name just some of them.

1) Best game of the year: 1. The Witcher 2. Bioshock 3. Half-Life 2: the orange box
2) Best action game: 1. Bioshock 2. Half-Life 2: the orange box 3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
3) Best RTS: 1. Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars 2. World in Conflict 3. Supreme Commander
4) Best racing game: 1. Test Drive Unlimited 2. Colin McRae: DiRT 3. Need for Speed ProStreet
5) Best sports game: 1. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 2. FIFA 08 3. FIFA Manager 08

Full results: http://top.ag.ru/2007/

Any comments? :)

As I am a little bit "remaining behind gamer" I want to try some of the best games: Bioshock, Test Derive Unlimited, PES 2008 and FIFA Manager 08.

kel101 03-06-2008 02:56 AM

hmm id have to disagree with that, i didnt hear that much about witcher, I'll have to look it up. I would defiantly say bioshock was in contention, but after buying a ps3 (yaay :D) and playing call of duty, it blew me away, even more so than bioshock and the orange box. As far as racing games go, i though need for speed was aweful, but i did like the looks of forza for the 360, but i did like diRT as well. As far as sports games go i cant really disagree because for most people the new learning curve introduced in fifa by the new ball physics was too much, and pro evo is a lot easier to get to grips with.

I do have 1 complaint.... crysis isnt on that list

Ok, here is detailed rating of Crysis for you (nomination - rank):
1) Best game of the year: 5
2) Best action game: 4
3) Best multiplayer game of the year: 5
4) Best gaming plot of the year: 7
5) Best visual: 1
6) Best sound: 5
7) Unjustified expectations: 5

Not too bad, but far from the best... :( Let me remind you that this are results of gamers' poll.

Can you say something about Test Drive Unlimited? Did you play it?

Is the game really that good? Everyone is talking about it and I even haven't seen the screenshots!

kel101 03-07-2008 11:55 AM

i havnt heard anything about it over here :s

I played Gears Of War this weekend! This game is insane! I liked it very much.

nikopolidis 03-12-2008 09:20 AM

This weekend I've bought one of the "best games of 2007" according to the list above.
Test Drive Unlimited . Well, guys, I really enjoyed it! Excellent graphics, beautiful cars, interesting plot, amazing and the biggest landscape I ever seen in video games (Island Ohao). I had some problems with driving control. It takes time to get used to it. Another thing is that I play it on Laptop. I think laptop is not very good for such games.
I really recommend you to get this game if you like racing genre! I have played NFS Pro Street. There is only one thing in which NFS doesn't yield to TDU - graphics. TDU is the best racing game of 2007, it is true. :)

kel101 03-13-2008 03:51 PM

nice, i will give it a look. Btw does anyone here play COD4 ps3???

Do you mean joystick? Or it is similar to console joypad?
I thought that perfect thing to play racing games with is steering wheel...
By the way they recommend to play TDU with steering wheel because it is hard to control the car with keypad. I agree. It is really hard but possible to get used to. Maybe I'm going to borrow my friend's steering wheel for it.. ;)

kel101 03-14-2008 12:29 PM

steering wheels are really good for some games, an alternative (for pc's anyway) would be the sidewinder joypad, which has motion sensors. It's a lot better than say the ps3 motion sensors as it actually works!

 Tis awesome, in fact its amazing, IF you have a rig that can run it...
http://www.gametrailers.com/game/2509.html

Watch the review in hd to get a small idea of how good it is (its been scaled down of course) also take the review with a pinch of salt, other places like 1up give if a much better rating

Sounds interesting. I think I'll buy it then! My Sony VAIO may not be the fastest machine ever, but I hope it will run with average video options

I have the same thoughts about my Toshiba laptop. I have uncertainty about how it would run Bioshock.. I've seen system requirements of this game. Looks rather high.. :o

They arnt as high as crysis, you should be able to play with at least 2gb of ram(essential) 128mb gpu and 1.83 cd

specter 03-24-2008 03:36 AM

The specs, I think, are pretty low... Taking into account that Bioshock works pretty slow. I haven't completed the game yet. There was some point in the game when I grew tired of it. Even Gears of War (which is rather monotonous) was a better game to play
