I wrote the two posts I linked you to as advice to someone who wanted to get better. It's easier (and cleaner) to give you links rather than copy and paste it all here. There's also other solid advice there, too, that I thought you might enjoy.

well i got a 360 and play rainbow six vegas sometimes on live

my gamer tag is Larkdog80 if you want to add me. I need to get some more Live games, because I only have one at the moment.

Gosh...I might have to break down and buy a 360 with the way this conversation is going. I could easily talk my wife into it, she'd pay $400 just to play geometry wars! Everytime we walk into a game shop she belines for the 360, kicks some teenager off who's playing Guitar Hero 3 or something, and precedes to play Geometry Wars until I drag her off! At least it helps me get into the store to begin with...

My wife is a strange duck when it comes to games. She likes them just fine, but she only plays every now and again. Take Oblivion for example (which I've been playing in copious amounts lately), she really likes watching me play. Like, to the point where she looks at me late at night and says, with those darling eyes of her's, "hey, let's get going to bed so that I can watch you play Oblivion on your laptop." Yeah...

What's even more funny is that it's turned her into a "back seat gamer". She's always telling me what to do, (and I listen... sometimes). I just need to get her some games of her own to play on her computer, or something to that effect. She does like the game Okami, for PS2...but other than that...

Edit: @Mikey-San--forgive me for perhaps being ignorant, but you linked to Freeverse as an explanation for why you are biased towards the 360. I don't get it, do you work for Freeverse?
Edit: On further investigation...I see someone with the same tag as you playing dictator on the forums over there...hmmm...I'll look into it more, unless you'd rather just put me out of my misery.

~
Even more Edit: Okay, I'm seriously starting to feel like a stalker. But I found your site, I see that you're a writer, and unless you collect weird photos of macworld awards for freeverse (which would make you slightly weirder than me), you have to work for them. But, you're not mentioned on the site. So I have to wonder what it is exactly you do for Freeverse, and why it is that makes you so biased for 360.

~
Editing is fun!--Yes! I'm a stalker lvl2 now! I found what you do on wikipedia (weird, eh?)! But since you haven't exactly infered that, and I assume you'd appreciate your anonymity, I'll leave that for you to say if you so choose. Though I must say, that sounds like a difficult job.

rainbow six las vegas made me buy a 360. Played it at a friends house and got hooked, next week went and bought a 360 lol.

Mikey-San 12-04-2007 09:24 PM

I do a bunch of things here. That's really only one. I'm not quite sure how a Wikipedia user came up with "UI Design", though . . . maybe it was on an old version of our site. Shrug.

I linked to one of the XBLA titles of ours that I worked on. That's all the joke was.

tlarkin: R6:V is a pretty hot game. There's used to be an office copy floating around somewhere, but I think someone took it home . . .

tlarkin 12-04-2007 09:46 PM

Mikey, your website is nuts, I am not sure what it is you do or what you are trying to accomplish with it. I did find your chat log about youtube very humorous though.

Think I may hop onto some R6V here in a minute after I cook these tacos and brew this Tea, or maybe I'll watch this cheesy bound to be horrible werewolf movie I rented.

it is a place of wonder and merriment; an enchanted place of mirth and cursing occasionally pock-marked by pretentiousness and witticisms

If you think about it, it is to much for consoles, and 8800gtx ultra cant run it at full spec, well it can but it cant have the full anti aliasing. In crysis it goes up to 16x which is freakin awesome. the 8800 ultra is 768mb (i think) and the 360 is 128 (or 256mb im not sure) and the ps3 has a 256mb gpu, It would be possible to put crysis on a blu-ray disk, but i doubt it will come to a console to the next next generation. I think even by this time next year, it will still be easily the best looking game and no other game will come close to having the same realism and physics. And the coolest thing is, cryisis is confirmed as a trilogy, just imagine what the 3rd one will look like :D:D:D

tlarkin 12-05-2007 09:50 AM

that may be true but consoles hold something over PCs, PCs have way more over head with more complex Operating Systems, where a console is streamlined for gaming. My 360 i think at times out performs my PC.

Played some rainbow six vegas last night, god I love the shield and hand gun combo, its so cheap but its fun to kill people with a little pistol.

Not knowing exactly how they've implemented their engine, I figure the CryTek team wasn't interested in optimizing their engine for the current-gen consoles. That or they didn't have the time or manpower. That's totally acceptable, but knowing what we know about the 360, not all of us buy the reason they gave.

As for realism . . . I gotta say that I'm kinda over "realism" in gaming, for the most part. I want to be a ninja; I want to jump 10 feet in the air and rain badass down on my enemies. Earth Defense Force 2017 was some of the best gaming I've had in ages, mostly due to:

- Giant freaking ants
- Giant freaking robots
- Rapid-fire rocket launchers
- Being able to level entire cities with said rapid-fire rocket launchers (and other ridiculous weapons)

Speaking of CryTek's physics engine, though:

Now them's is some awesome crates.

I dont get how he made the framerate really smooth, and did he do all that in the sandbox editor?

The movie was in-engine, but not in real time. Each frame of the movie took eight seconds to render out.

kel101 12-05-2007 03:51 PM

oh ok, would take some cpu to get that to go smooth

Mikey-San 12-05-2007 04:14 PM

Yeah, the CryTek engine allows throttling of frames and physics accuracy. There are settings you can tweak that adjusts this stuff, which then has an impact on engine performance.

kel101 12-05-2007 04:17 PM

speaking of killer gaming pcs, check out my thread http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=82465

Jay Carr 12-05-2007 06:00 PM

Yeah, I was told the CryTek engine was crazy good, but I didn't know they had done such a good job on the physics. The part where they dropped the giant man was hilarous! But, I have to admit, we have bunches of Engines out there that can render this stuff if you want, so long as it's not in real time. As I recall, rendering CG in movies can take weeks... I wonder how much processing power and code streamlining it would take to make something like that render in real time...

On the subject of bringing CryTek, and thus Crysis, to the 360. Are you really sure that would work out so well? I mean, Oblivion gave the PS3 and 360 a run for their money, and that engine was about a year old when it was ported... Wouldn't the amount of throttling back you'd have to do severely diminish the players experience?

Baring that, I wonder how much money Microsoft gave them to keep it exclusive...

kel101 12-05-2007 06:13 PM

I dont think crysis will come to consoles, the game has come out, and even top spec pc's cant run it at full settings, and a hige resolution with a decent fremrate. I think the whole point of the series, is to show to the world what direct x 10 can do and show how far pc's can be pushed. Plus to show how far ahead crytek are in the engine department

I won't say for certain, because I'm not privvy to the internals of the engine, but no one ever said it has to run at its absolute max quality. (And "huge resolution" is also misleading, because the base resolution requirement of the 360 is 720p. Games are not required to run higher than this.) I would be shocked if there were no way to bring a sufficiently pretty version to the 360.

Let's put it this way:

Do they want it to be a game or a tech demo?

kel101 12-06-2007 02:51 AM

Personally i think they've managed both

Mikey-San 12-06-2007 03:09 AM

There's no answer. It's a rhetorical question meant to say, "Either they're trying to be the guys who require more hardware than the other guys, or they want to make a game."
