Game Consoles and Noobs: A Fragging Made in Heaven
Zalister and I got a little carried away and derailed this thread:
http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=82305 Soooo let's pick up here instead with talk of non-Mac gaming. |
Well, I play rainbow six vegas on my 360 sometimes online, but when i want a constant set of action I load of CSS, but I only play the gun game mod, which is fast paced and fun. I like knifing people, its fun.
I never really said noob, nub, llama, etc. I just cussed if I got fragged by a cheap shot or a camper. |
Campers are like free kills. :D
"Hey Jimmy, I got a great strategy!" "Yeah?" "I'm gonna be a sitting duck!" |
when im at my cousins i play the call of duty games i have to say that modern warfare is my fav whats your fav xbox game mikey-san???
|
Currently, I'm on a Halo 3 kick. I've almost got all of the achievements. I want my Marathon helmet. I may be a little biased here, though.
I've played CoD4 but not had a chance to play through it. It's on my list, along with a few others. That list just keeps piling up . . . Portal was probably the overall most fun I've had in a shooter in AGES. I hope they release some new chapters or a sequel at some point. There's a lot of neat stuff on Live Arcade, though. Exit is a nice bit of fresh air, Undertow is a GREAT title, and Puzzle Quest is crack. |
i love to play halo but i suck big time
but its fun though |

dont insult me i dont suck that bad
|
Do you guys play RTS at all? I am really stoked about Starcraft 2 coming out this new year

The in-game footage that's been shown so far looks really, really hot. Can't wait to play it. |
Yeah I am building a new PC for Starcraft 2 and Fallout 3, well and Crysis
|
OMG crysis is awesome, i just wish i had a graphics card that could play it well..
|
Crysis is so pretty. I don't buy their whole "it's too badass to develop for the current-gen consoles" line, though. I want it on my 360!

mikey-san is, he thinks suck bad enough to have to read a tutorial i have room for improvement though. but i can improve myself |

well now that I have some disposable income thanks to my new job, I am going to be building a new gaming rig with a DX10 card, probably not top of the line but definitely upper tier.
The Fallout series is probably my all time favorite PC video games. I can't wait for Fallout 3, I just pray to the gods that Bethesda doesn't screw it up. |

well i got a 360 and play rainbow six vegas sometimes on live
my gamer tag is Larkdog80 if you want to add me. I need to get some more Live games, because I only have one at the moment. |
Gosh...I might have to break down and buy a 360 with the way this conversation is going. I could easily talk my wife into it, she'd pay $400 just to play geometry wars! Everytime we walk into a game shop she belines for the 360, kicks some teenager off who's playing Guitar Hero 3 or something, and precedes to play Geometry Wars until I drag her off! At least it helps me get into the store to begin with...
My wife is a strange duck when it comes to games. She likes them just fine, but she only plays every now and again. Take Oblivion for example (which I've been playing in copious amounts lately), she really likes watching me play. Like, to the point where she looks at me late at night and says, with those darling eyes of her's, "hey, let's get going to bed so that I can watch you play Oblivion on your laptop." Yeah... What's even more funny is that it's turned her into a "back seat gamer". She's always telling me what to do, (and I listen... sometimes). I just need to get her some games of her own to play on her computer, or something to that effect. She does like the game Okami, for PS2...but other than that... Edit: @Mikey-San--forgive me for perhaps being ignorant, but you linked to Freeverse as an explanation for why you are biased towards the 360. I don't get it, do you work for Freeverse? Edit: On further investigation...I see someone with the same tag as you playing dictator on the forums over there...hmmm...I'll look into it more, unless you'd rather just put me out of my misery. ~ Even more Edit: Okay, I'm seriously starting to feel like a stalker. But I found your site, I see that you're a writer, and unless you collect weird photos of macworld awards for freeverse (which would make you slightly weirder than me), you have to work for them. But, you're not mentioned on the site. So I have to wonder what it is exactly you do for Freeverse, and why it is that makes you so biased for 360. ~ Editing is fun!--Yes! I'm a stalker lvl2 now! I found what you do on wikipedia (weird, eh?)! But since you haven't exactly infered that, and I assume you'd appreciate your anonymity, I'll leave that for you to say if you so choose. Though I must say, that sounds like a difficult job. |
rainbow six las vegas made me buy a 360. Played it at a friends house and got hooked, next week went and bought a 360 lol.
|
I do a bunch of things here. That's really only one. I'm not quite sure how a Wikipedia user came up with "UI Design", though . . . maybe it was on an old version of our site. Shrug.
I linked to one of the XBLA titles of ours that I worked on. That's all the joke was. tlarkin: R6:V is a pretty hot game. There's used to be an office copy floating around somewhere, but I think someone took it home . . . |
Mikey, your website is nuts, I am not sure what it is you do or what you are trying to accomplish with it. I did find your chat log about youtube very humorous though.
Think I may hop onto some R6V here in a minute after I cook these tacos and brew this Tea, or maybe I'll watch this cheesy bound to be horrible werewolf movie I rented. |

that may be true but consoles hold something over PCs, PCs have way more over head with more complex Operating Systems, where a console is streamlined for gaming. My 360 i think at times out performs my PC.
Played some rainbow six vegas last night, god I love the shield and hand gun combo, its so cheap but its fun to kill people with a little pistol. |

As for realism . . . I gotta say that I'm kinda over "realism" in gaming, for the most part. I want to be a ninja; I want to jump 10 feet in the air and rain badass down on my enemies. Earth Defense Force 2017 was some of the best gaming I've had in ages, mostly due to: - Giant freaking ants - Giant freaking robots - Rapid-fire rocket launchers - Being able to level entire cities with said rapid-fire rocket launchers (and other ridiculous weapons) Speaking of CryTek's physics engine, though: http://www.stage6.com/user/Neillithan/video/1911267/ Now them's is some awesome crates. |
I dont get how he made the framerate really smooth, and did he do all that in the sandbox editor?
|
Quote:
|
oh ok, would take some cpu to get that to go smooth
|
Yeah, the CryTek engine allows throttling of frames and physics accuracy. There are settings you can tweak that adjusts this stuff, which then has an impact on engine performance.
|
speaking of killer gaming pcs, check out my thread http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=82465
|
Yeah, I was told the CryTek engine was crazy good, but I didn't know they had done such a good job on the physics. The part where they dropped the giant man was hilarous! But, I have to admit, we have bunches of Engines out there that can render this stuff if you want, so long as it's not in real time. As I recall, rendering CG in movies can take weeks... I wonder how much processing power and code streamlining it would take to make something like that render in real time...
On the subject of bringing CryTek, and thus Crysis, to the 360. Are you really sure that would work out so well? I mean, Oblivion gave the PS3 and 360 a run for their money, and that engine was about a year old when it was ported... Wouldn't the amount of throttling back you'd have to do severely diminish the players experience? Baring that, I wonder how much money Microsoft gave them to keep it exclusive... |
I dont think crysis will come to consoles, the game has come out, and even top spec pc's cant run it at full settings, and a hige resolution with a decent fremrate. I think the whole point of the series, is to show to the world what direct x 10 can do and show how far pc's can be pushed. Plus to show how far ahead crytek are in the engine department
|

Let's put it this way: Do they want it to be a game or a tech demo? |
Personally i think they've managed both
|
There's no answer. It's a rhetorical question meant to say, "Either they're trying to be the guys who require more hardware than the other guys, or they want to make a game."
|
That does make sense. So why did they choose to not put the game on the 360 then? I mean, they do have the functionality to throttle back the game, they had to implement that in order to run it on Windows. Is the 360 difficult to translate to from PC?
|
Eh, yes and no. It's entirely dependent on how you've written your game. The line we give people is that if you're familiar with Win32 programming, getting into the 360 isn't a Herculean task. (There's no DirectX, for example, but there is Direct3D, the 3D API of DirectX.) Overall, developing software for the 360 is different enough for a PC-developed title not to be directly portable, because of how you have to manage the resources available to you, as well as API differences and platform requirements. But it's doable. Lots of companies do it.
In the end, it probably came down to manpower, team management, and time resources. Don't be shocked if in a year, someone announces a CryTek Engine-based title for the 360 or PS3. |
PS3? Really? I thought that thing was supposed to be a real pain in the butt to write for. Everyone seemed so impressed when they found out tek5 was going to be able to compile for PC, 360 & PS3. Was I mislead, is it not really that hard?

I guess in the end it's just a cost benefit analysis, right? With a small team...that might be difficult. But if Crysis remains as popular as it is, maybe someone will step in and ask to port it for them. Works all the time with Mac games, so why not for a console, right? Anyway, only time will tell.

I just think this is more plausible than "our game is too badass for the next-gen consoles". |
Is that what they said? Good gravy ;).
I do have to admit though, it is nice to see some exclusivity for the PC gaming market (since, you know, we'll probably never seen exclusivity for the Mac gaming market). The market has been, shall we say, unhealthy. I'd like to see it perk up because I really think that the PC is a great testbed for new technologies, and I'd hate to see that go away... |

but about gaming... I played rock band last night at my neighbors house. As lame as i thought it was, I must admit; very sadly....that I had fun playing it. |
If it crysis was ported to a console, it would be pushing the limits of ps3 and the 360. I have no doubt that they can and will eventually port it to consoles, but the graphics will be no where near as good as the pc version...
|
ooh a slight change of topic to stop this becoming the crysis thread, have you seen the new gta trailer... :O amazing
|
I have, the graphics look great, and I've always loved the gameplay in GTA (in a sinister sort of way.) Can't wait to get my hands on a copy... Have you heard any news on any new features in the gameplay?
|
a few, the combat is still very secretive, the only things that are certain are that:
You can change clothes but not get haircuts You cant just open a car door and steal a car, you have to walk up unnoticed, smash a window and hotwire it, (apparently this animation is awesome) You can climb up ladders and flag poles There are boats and choppers, but no planes Once you load the game up at the beginning, there are no more load times A multiplayer mode has been confirmed. But im sure we will learn more when release becomes nearer. |
