keep the fans going

is there any app that when i close my screen on my beautiful new macbook the fans keep going until it cools down or until i quit the app etc
and whould it work with smcfancontrol

Las_Vegas 12-02-2007 10:38 PM

Your computer isn't like a combustion engine. It doesn't need to be cooled quickly after power is removed as long as the temperature is maintained while the power is applied.

blueballs 12-02-2007 10:44 PM

i want it to cool when i put to to sleep

Las_Vegas 12-02-2007 10:49 PM

It will be cool in a few seconds. It won't hurt anything or anyone while it gets there.

DeltaMac 12-02-2007 10:49 PM

Your MacBook goes to sleep when you close the lid, and the system naturally cools down. The only part that might still be inducing any heat at all, would be the battery if it's still charging at that time. Even that would not be much heat.

Why do you think that continuing to run the fans would be important when the power is essentially 'off'?

Even if your MacBook were to shut itself off because of overheating, the fan shuts off completely then, too.

blueballs 12-02-2007 10:50 PM

but i want it to cool down as fast as it can so i can back to FRAGGIN NOOBS

Las_Vegas 12-02-2007 10:57 PM

What is a FRAGGIN NOOBS?

DeltaMac 12-02-2007 11:01 PM

If you haven't done that yet, add more RAM to your MacBook. Lots of memory can help your system, as the processor/bus can do its job without needing to go to the hard drive so much.
This can often result in a (somewhat) cooler running system. And, you get to 'frag more noobs' - eh?
You can also try out one of those 'cool-pads' that you can find in most electronics stores.

oh come on arent you a gamer???

Las_Vegas 12-02-2007 11:13 PM

No. I'm not a gamer… This also explains why your 'fps' reference was lost on me.

There is absolutely no reason to speed the cooling of your Mac when it's put to sleep. You can immediately shove it in your backpack/case/dresser drawer/secret compartment without any worry about harming it.

blueballs 12-02-2007 11:36 PM

ok thanks

oh and fraggin means: killing noobs etc

Mikey-San 12-03-2007 12:52 AM

Does anyone actually say "fraggin' noobs" anymore without being sarcastic? I thought that fad passed with Quake 1's popularity.

Jay Carr 12-03-2007 01:50 AM

Yes, hardcore gamer still use that term quite often. It's what keeps us hardcore... (though truth be told, we do usually say with a twinkle in our eyes these days, just happens when we get older I guess.)

blueballs, are you overclocking or something? Why are you so worried about system temperature?

Anyway, one thing you can do to make the computer cool faster is to turn the computer so that the vents on the back are pointing up.

Also, to more clearly explain blueballs problem-- If you run a game on your computer for a prolonged amount of time, then put the computer to sleep by closing it, then open the computer within five minutes, the computers temperature appears to be as high as it was before you put the computer to sleep.

Why do I say this? Because when I put the computer to sleep the fans are whirring at 6000, and after I wake it up, even before going into a game, they usually whir all the way back up to 6000 for a couple minutes before the system finally cools down.

Point being, I think blueballs is right. I think the computer is not cooling down completely in sleep.

But, I will say this. Blueballs--if you're that worried about the temperature then just do this. Turn off the game and all other programs, turn off the screen and then unplug your computer from the wall (which, if you have the proper power settings, will make all of the electronics run at a lower power setting, which reduces temperature). The fans will cool the system down just as about as quickly as if you'd turned the computer off and were letting the fans run.

But, one last word of warning, repeatedly heating up and cooling down your system is bad for the electronics. Heating up the computer causes things to expand, and cooling causes them to contract. Over long periods of time this could cause metal fatigue. You're almost better off just playing the game and not worrying about the heat. Trust me, Apple did a lot of work making sure your computer can't overheat itself. So, unless you've been messing with Apples default settings, don't worry about it.

…And he would be right. My point is that it will not get any warmer and will actually cool before it's woken since no additional heat is being generated or distributed. An automobile might leave its fans on for a few minutes after the engine is off. The reason is that the coolant within the engine may still be much hotter than is safe and needs to be cycled through the cooling system again. This could also be the case on a desktop computer with a liquid cooling system, but is not with a notebook's passive cooling system.

None of my friends say it unless they're making fun of people who say it.

Who has time to worry about this when your "FRAGGIN NOOBS"?

blueballs, Why don't you just get someone to buy you a giant gaming PC and be done with it.

I keep tellin' the kid that he should get a 360 to sate his gaming needs. Not expensive, tons of good current titles, XBLA, and you can use the big TV in the living room instead of staying locked up in your bedroom staring at a monitor all night . . .

Jay Carr 12-03-2007 01:29 PM

Ah, but fr4g1|\| n00b$ is not nearly as fun in Halo 3 as it is in Crysis! Seriously, look at the reviews on that game! Not that a MB could run it...

Mikey-San 12-03-2007 02:08 PM

Keep talkin' smack about Halo 3 and I'll <generic Internet tough guy rage>.

I agree completely, though I have to wonder, do they have a keyboard and mouse for the XBox360. I remember them having one for the dreamcast at one point...

Mikey-San 12-03-2007 07:57 PM

I actually play better with a controller, strangely enough. I'm not sure why, exactly, but I suspect it's because I was playing console games before I got my first computer, and simply have been playing with the controller longer than keyboard+mouse as a result.

Only for textual input. You cannot use them for gameplay. (Just use a computer if you want that, after all.)

Jay Carr 12-03-2007 11:40 PM

See, and I'd agree except there are some great games on XBox360 games that I'd like to play, but the controller scheme bugs me a bit (though it doesn't really stop me). I think it would be nice to use a keyboard with, oh well. Some day the perfect console will come out...with a functional keyboard.

Don't count on it happening. We test and balance our games for controllers, because it's a console, after all. Everyone has the same gear, the field is constant and level. It makes our testing and design processes really nice.

Well, since Apple doesn't have a console, I don't think I'd worry to much :).

Anyone ever notice how much the PS3 SIXAXIS(TM) looked like the old Pippin controller before Sony wised up?
