Leopard HP LaserJet 1000 incompatible?
With OS 10.4 I used to be able to print on my HP LaserJet 1000 using this excellent piece of advice: Install a LaserJet 1000 printer driver
Thu, Jun 17 '04 at 12:31PM PDT • Submitted by jasonz. (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...04061623340681) Now nothing works. If "jasong" is still around this forum, I would love to hear from him. Any advice or solution would be much appreciated. mazmac |
Hi,
The CUPS Zenographic driver in the previous hint that worked for the HP Laserjet 1000 under Tiger no longer works under Leopard. I've just installed these drivers: http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/O...MacOSX/foo2zjs Managed to get from installation to printing a page on leopard in about 5mins - great! Andrew |
Yes, it works
I had the exact same problem. Worked perfectly for me too.

I have been looking forever to try and find a way to get my HP LaserJet 1000 printer to work with OS X. After a few days of searching I finally found a way to do it. Having gone through such a long process to get it to work and having a horribly hard time trying to find the files to do it, I decided to compile the instructions and necessary files into a .dmg so that others can use it. Thanks to foomatic, foo2zjs, and GhostScript for their work to make this happen!
The .dmg I created has four files in it 3 .dmgs, foomatic-rip, GhostScript, and the foo2zjs drivers. There is a readme file on how to do it, but I'll copy and paste it here too: Instructions for installing HP Laserjet 1000 (and many others) Tested on Mac OS X 10.5.8, with HP Laserjet 1000 1) Mount and install gplgs-8.64so-ub.dmg (GhostScript 8.64) 2) Mount and install foomatic-rip-4.0.2.211.dmg 3) Mount and install foo2zjs-1.1.2-ub.dmg 4) Navigate to foo2zjs-1.1.2-ub.dmg, helpers, then copy load_LaserJet_firmware_v4 to Desktop, or other convenient place, as you will have to run it everytime you reboot your computer. This only applys to GDI LaserJets like the LaserJet 1000, so you may not have to do this.* 5) Plug your printer into a USB Port 6) Go to System Preferences, Print & Fax, click the + (plus) sign in on the lower left side, make sure you are on the default tab, click your printer, then under Print Using click select driver to use, then type in your printer name (ex. HP LaserJet 1000) and select the proper driver. (Mine is HP LaserJet 1000 Foomatic/foo2zjs (recommended)) 7) Run the load_LaserJet_firmware_v4 script, my printer makes a spooling up sound when it is run. 8) That's it! Print a test page to see if it works! Credits go to the authors of GhostScript, Foomatic, and foo2zjs for their great work! *When the script is run it checks for LaserJets 1000, 1005, 1018, and 1020 printers. If you have one of those, you will need to run this script at every reboot. Downloaded .dmgs from: foo2zjs: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Drivers/foo2zjs.shtml Foomatic: http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/Op...acOSX/foomatic GhostScript: http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/Op...acOSX/foomatic In torrent form (so it won't die...):http://www.mininova.org/tor/2878785 |

I has made all step by step under the instruction. Does not work. All uninstall. Has made still five times. During installation foo2zjs-1.1.2-ub.dmg the script in the terminal is started. I enter password, I select 4 (Laserjet 1000). The printer HP Laserjet 1000 and driver HP LaserJet 1000 Foomatic/foo2zjs (recommended) in System Preference I see. I load load_LaserJet_firmware_v4 script and receive the message: Last login: Tue Dec 1 15:11:00 on ttys000 Macintosh-3:~ macintosh$ /Users/macintosh/Desktop/load_LaserJet_firmware_v4.command ; exit; Printer AdobePDF7: Not a qualifying HP LaserJet printer. Printer HP_LaserJet_1000: Cannot locate firmware file. No printer queue found for HP LaserJet 1005. No printer queue found for HP LaserJet 1018. No printer queue found for HP LaserJet 1020. Printer does not wish to work. Any sounds of type "spooling up sound". |
HP 1000 Snow Leopard Drivers
I followed the instructions and my HP LaserJet 1000 now works perfectly with Snow Leopard.
Thanks! |
Updated links to all the installation files.
foo2zjs: http://www.openprinting.org/download...s-1.1.2-ub.dmg foomatic-rip: http://www.openprinting.org/download...-4.0.4.217.dmg GhostScript: http://www.openprinting.org/download...gplgs-8.71.dmg Great guide! Thanks for your assistance! |
Thanks to all who researched and created the instructions in this post and the authors of the free software that makes it happen.
The instructions contributed above may not be sufficient for everyone to complete the setup successfully, so I'll recount my experience with OS X 10.6. (Snow Leopard, version 10.6.5). While recounting the previous authors' instructions, I will document some unstated steps that it took to make it work for me: A. As previously stated, download the three necessary files: GhostScript: http://www.openprinting.org/download...gplgs-8.71.dmg foomatic-rip: http://www.openprinting.org/download...-4.0.4.217.dmg foo2zjs: http://www.openprinting.org/download...s-1.1.2-ub.dmg B. Installation: Navigate to the location where your files are saved. Mine were in the downloads directory of my "user directory" (i.e., /users/my_name/Downloads) 1) Double-click on gplgs-8.64so-ub.dmg (GhostScript 8.64) a) A window jumps up displaying the contents of the directory. b) Double-click on the package named GPL Ghostscript.mpkg c) Keep pressing the "Continue" button, and accept the license agreement when necessary d) Press the "Install" button & enter your root password e) After receiving confirmation that "The Installation was successful," press the "Close" button. 2) Double-click on foomatic-rip-4.0.2.211.dmg a) A window jumps up displaying the contents of the directory. b) Double-click on the package named Foomatic-RIP.pkg c) Keep pressing the "Continue" button, and accept the license agreement when necessary d) Press the "Install" button & enter your root password e) After receiving confirmation that "The Installation was successful," press the "Close" button. 3) Double-click on foo2zjs-1.1.2-ub.dmg a) A window jumps up displaying the contents of the directory. b) Double-click on the package named foo2zjs.pkg c) Keep pressing the "Continue" button, select the language if other than English, and accept the license agreement when necessary d) Press the "Install" button & enter your root password e) After receiving confirmation that "The Installation was successful," press the "Close" button. f) After the install window closes, you will see the contents of foo2zjs still on the screen. g) Double click on the "Helpers" directory h) Double click on "Install_Printer_Extras" i) Click on the "Open" button j) A terminal window will open and run the script. Enter your root password when prompted. k) Select the number corresponding to your printer model. l) If success, you get a message like this: #? 4 You have chosen "HP LaserJet 1000 firmware file" Getting HP LaserJet 1000 firmware file % Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed 100 50416 100 50416 0 0 12788 0 0:00:03 0:00:03 --:--:-- 12987 x sihp1000.img (c) Copyright Hewlett-Packard 2001 Restarting CUPS daemon If no error messages have been shown, the requested files have been installed. A copy of the files that were installed are on your Desktop. These temporary files may now be safely deleted. Do you want to delete the copy of the installed files? (y,n) m) Type "y" for yes to delete the copy of the installed files. n) Close the Terminal window and you will see the contents of the "Helpers" folder o) Next, double-click on the file named "load_LaserjJet_firmware_v4" p) Click the "Open" button q) If you are successful, you will get a message like this immediately under the name of your printer (while all other LaserJet models will say either "Not a qualifying HP LaserJet printer" or "No printer queue found . . . ": Printer HP_LaserJet_1000: Sending HP LaserJet 1000 firmware to printer HP_LaserJet_1000 . . . lp -d HP_LaserJet_1000 -oraw /usr/local/share/foo2zjs/firmware/sihp1000.dl request id is HP_LaserJet_1000-362 (1 file(s)) No printer queue found for HP LaserJet 1005. No printer queue found for HP LaserJet 1018. No printer queue found for HP LaserJet 1020. r) Close the Terminal window & close the "Helpers" directory window. s) You should also see that your desktop displays a copy of the file named "load_LaserJet_firmware_v4" for future use. 5) Power on your printer and plug its cable into a USB Port 6) Go to System Preferences, then select Print & Fax, a) click the + (plus) sign in on the lower left side of the winds b) make sure you are on the default tab c) if your printer is connected and powered on, you should see the name of your printer listed. c) click your printer's name d) wait a few seconds & then under "Print Using" selector, click the proper driver to use (Mine is HP LaserJet 1000 Foomatic/foo2zjs ) 7) Run the "load_LaserJet_firmware_v4" script file every time you restart your computer, or power on your printer, or plug in the USB cable to your printer. Good luck to all, and thanks again to my predecessors whose work I have merely re-posted. Ian Robinson Salem, Ohio |

Your post should be memorialized somehow--it's clearly written amd represents the only solution for people who have an HP Laserjet 1000 and are using a Mac with Snow Leopard. The HP Laserjet 1000 is/was a great printer, sort of a hybrid between USB and parallel interface, and I've never understood why HP didn't support it for OSX. But then, HP isn't what it used to be, is it?. Ken |
All of a sudden, printing has stopped working. HPLJ1000w, MacOS 10.6.6. Some printouts are disappearing from the print queue, as if they were printed. Others do not. Ideas?
Edit: Old fashioned reboot of the printer solved yet another headache. False alert! :) |
Just got my new iMac yesterday and discovered that my HP Laserjet 1000 didn't have a Mac driver (migrated from an XP machine). I tried the updated directions. They worked EXACTLY as described. Still not able to print. The print queue says "sending print data" and then says "unable to send print data" then pauses the printer.
I've tried rebooting and unplugging the printer and plugging it back in and deleting the printer and adding it again. Nothing seems to work. On OS Ver 10.6.6. Any thoughts? I really love the printer and don't want to have to get a new one..... |
Do you know if the firmware has been sent to the printer? There's a program you have to run once you've connected the printer.
|
Not sure, is it described in the steps above and I missed it?
|
7) Run the "load_LaserJet_firmware_v4" script file every time you restart your computer, or power on your printer, or plug in the USB cable to your printer.
|
Yes, I had taken that step (although I didn't have the desktop icon - I ran it from the zip file).
|
Thank you Ian Robinson. Those instructions are so clear and complete!
However, I ran into a problem near the end, and found that I had to do steps 5 and 6 before steps o thru q worked properly. Also, the script does not appear on my desktop, but "Install foo2zjs" does. I can't figure out from the Apple Help how to get the script on the desktop, but that's OK. I can get to the script easily from "Install foo2zjs". It's a very minor inconvenience. Thanks again. I just bought this Mac. It runs Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.7 What a relief to get my LaserJet 1000 working! |
I forgot to mention some details in my comments earlier today:
1. The foomatic-rip link in Ian Robinson's instructions now points to "Page not found." On that page, click on "Foomatic" on the second menu line at top of page, scroll down to "Full Download" title on the newly loaded page, and click on "foomatic-filters" to get the latest version. 2. When I first tried to run the script "Install_Printer_Extras" (steps h to m), it did not run. I restarted the computer and unplugged the printer's USB cable. Then the script ran. I don't know if restarting or unplugging made the difference. Most of the details are a mystery to me. 3. As I mentioned in the previous comments, the script "load_LaserJet..." did not run at first. I did steps 5 and 6 and then it ran. I just found the "load_LaserJet..." script on the "Finder" page under "Places", so this will be easier for me than working with the "Install foo2zjs" icon on the desktop. The instructions look complicated, but it's all easier than it looks. Thanks again to Ian Robinson for making this manageable. |
Correction
CORRECTION to my comments from a few hours ago, after deciphering my many scribbly notes better.
The proper foomatic-rip software is on a different website. Use the link to linuxfoundation.org specified by nehalemi7 near the beginning of this thread and look for the software. It's now version 4.0.6.230. Sorry for the error. |
OS X Lion 10.7.2
Since the above instructions were written for Snow Leopard I'm wondering if they will also work with OS X Lion 10.7.2? I just purchased my first iMac and I would like to use my HP LaserJet 1000 printer with it if possible. Thanking all members in advance for your assistance.

In the instructions it says: After issuing the last command, the printer will make a sound as if is starting up and the printer is all ready for printing. Mine didn't do that. I have a HP laserjet 1000. Anybody know where i'm going wrong? Mike |
