better aqua or x11 what is the difference...... hellloooooo???? any body out there

tlarkin 11-06-2007 01:02 PM

aqua will run natively on OS X, anything that runs under x11 would require x11 to be installed on your system.

Neo Office is a good one that I have used a bit and I liked it for what it was, free software.

blueballs 11-06-2007 01:07 PM

what is x11

Well, seeing as how TextEdit is a text editor, and not a word processor . . .

blueballs 11-06-2007 01:30 PM

good point but it still sucks

Photek 11-06-2007 02:59 PM

BlueBall..... apologies for the delayed reply :)

OpenOffice Aqua is still a beta... it has a few quirks... but its generally very good... If you don't get on with it.... NeoOffice is also very good and compiled from the same code.

grab the one from the link below that suits your OS....

AQUA....PPC or Intel... English language I presume!

blueballs 11-06-2007 04:35 PM

Neither Aqua nor X11 are word processors. You asked for a good, free word processor. TextEdit is in fact a good, free word processor. It's not a great word processor. It's good. You want a great word processor, spend some money and pay the great programmer for his/her work.

Mikey-San 11-07-2007 10:15 AM

TextEdit is not a word processor. :P

(But it's a fine free text editor! And Apple ships the source! Woo!)

Las_Vegas 11-07-2007 11:19 AM

Define a word processor. Tabs? It has it. Font selection and control? It has it. Search capabilities? It has it. Spell check? It has it.

SimpleText was a text editor. TextEdit is as much a word processor as many commercial word processors that have been available.

coopdevillan 11-07-2007 12:29 PM

Free and simple

I was directed to one called "Bean" it works really well.:D

GrayShades 11-07-2007 06:44 PM

I had looked at Bean, but I wouldn't find it satisfactory for my needs.

I'm looking for simple lightweight text editor or word processor, which supports tabs=multiple docs open in single window.

Have you tried TextWrangler?

hisara 03-22-2008 02:34 AM

I have not tried yet TextWrangler but i tried BBEdit. It uses Drawer.

Is it possible to force BBEdit to use tabs? I was hoping that TextEdit in Leopard would support tabs.

Any other apps with tabs?
