MS Office Apps crash after splash screen
OK, so I have seen reference to my problem here, but have had no luck with the previous posts. I am using Microsoft Office on my Mac Pro Intel Dual quad machine. I have had it for about two months and all of a sudden I cannot open any of my Microsoft applications. I have tried deleting all of the font files, getting rid of numerous items per different help forums and to no avail. Below is the error report that I have recieved after attempting to open any of my MS Office apps. Can anyone explain this to me?

OK, so My problem is the same, but my error report is not. Can anyone explain this to me?

Sorry Yellow, I had too many characters in my first post. Thanks for the reply
|
OK seriously, here is the whole thing, I put in two posts cause it is too long.
Code:
Binary Images Description: |
Hmmm nothing there really stands out to me...
Could be a corrupted shared memory bundle. You could try remove it, I believe it gets recreated at login, though it might require a reinstall. /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office/ShMem.bundle Or.. you could just zip it up and then run Word or somthing and see if it works. |
Did you need something else from me?
|
OK,
That did something, but not what I needed. Entourage still just crashes and gives me the unexpected EM. The rest of the office apps say that they cannot open MS office shared library. There is no error report generated. |
OK.. now you should try and reinstall Office and it should replace the shared memory bundle with a fresh (uncorrupted) version.. assuming of course that's the source of the problems.
|
Well,
Now it is back to doing the same old thing. Any other suggestions? |
I also had a co-worker drag his version onto a network drive and tried installing it from there and still no luck.
|
And if you log in as another user, does it work?
|
I tried installing an update as well and it gave me a similar error.
Code:
Command: Office 2004 11.3.8 Update |
As another user I get the shared library message
|
Do you have problems with other PPC applications?
|
Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by PPC?
|
If you mean microsoft.. The only other program I use is Messenger and it works fine.
|
Power PC.
You have an intel Mac. Older apps, like Office 2004 are built for PPC architecture and run on Intel Macs via the grace of Rosetta, an inline emulator for PPC code. I was curious if you, or someone else, managed to break Rosetta by removing it accidently. Open /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app, go to View -> Columns -> Make sure there's a check next to Kind, and then sort by Kind and see if there are any PowerPC apps, or if they're all Intel. |
They are all intel programs
|
You need to find a PPC app and try it. I don't have much in the way of suggestions.
Here is one: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id...nd-of-an-image |
is there somewhere I can go to reaquire my rosetta software or repair it?
|
Sound of an image works fine
|
that works just fine. Does this mean that Rosetta is not the issue?
|
Then it's not a Rosetta problem.
At this point, in my opinion, you need to just delete the MS Office hierarchy and completely reinstall from scratch. |
how do I do that
|
I have removed the Office file from Applications, removed preferences folder from my user library , and the main administrator of the machine. Anything else involved in the hierarchy?
|
Try using Spotlight to find any remaining detritus.
|
Well I searched Microsoft office through spotlight and deleted every file/folder I could find. I then repaired permissions and reinstalled Office. I opened Entourage first since it is my only truly vital MS program. It began installing fonts, but then crashed as usual. All of the rest of the programs followed suit. I am going to go home and attempt to do something tomorrow. If you come up with anything between now and then, please share. And thanks for all of your help.
|
Crashed installing fonts, eh?
Hmmm.... Nothing there leads me to believe that it's Font related.. but anything is possible. Though I don't think MS Office installs fonts to anyplace other than the User hierarchy, so that's not likely the culprint since it crashed in the same way for another user. And you're not using an UI "enhancements" like Shpaeshifter, or other Unsanity haxies, right? |
Shared Library error : See this MSFT KB http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=842646
If that doesn't provide a solution: First try downloading the combo updater from Apple and run it again rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files. Use "Remove Office" and re-install and update Office. If this does not work, you will need to do an Archive & Install of the OS. |
Based on your initial posts, you started out using version 11.2.5. Then in post #13 you indicated that you "applied an update" to 11.3.8.
MS has a non-standard update process. There are some incremental updates, and then a big "comprehensive" update, then some more incrementals, then another "comprehensive". To the best of my recollection, 11.3.5 or thereabouts was the last "comprehensive" update, while the subsequent ones are incrementals. Since you seem to have applied only the latest incremental one, without, apparently, having applied the previous ones, I believe that this is probably a major contributor to your problem. What you should try is to trash everything Office 2004 related from your current system, then install the original Office 2004 from your disk. Then go to the MS update site and go through very carefully all of their listed updates, checking out which was the last "comprehensive" update. Apply this update to your original installation, then all of the subsequent incremental ones until you finish with the most recent one. Pete |

I like your approach, but the system won't open anything produced by Microsoft, so I guess my only solution is to do an archive and install. Thanks for all of your help, I will report back with my final outcome. |

I guess the system is smarter than we thought, huh?? :D:D:D Seriously, good luck on the re-installations. Pete (unfortunately obliged to continue to use MS Excel for some 130 MB spreadsheets that won't work properly with the available alternatives) |

Do not use the "Software Update" but go directly to Apple's website. Select "Support" and enter your current OS version in the search box (IE: "10.4.10"). Locate the "Combo Update" for your Mac (PPC or Intel) and download it. Run that updater directly.

What Mac do you have? What is your current version of OS X? What Combo update did you download?

Well, all is fixed. I did and archive and install without reimporting user settings and such. Now everything works great. Thank you all for your time.
